I hate to put an open hihat between the kicks when you have a good rhythm going on. I hate those open hihats! It sounds too shitty when they are heard (for me) and I try to avoid using them.

what are yours?

I just generally hate sound... you know.. frequencies waveforms and all that crap...

Therefore I try to write no music whatsoever..

Sometimes though ya know I just HAVE to do it... I are almost must use these sounds...

But it hurts so so bad!

me too! i can never get them to a point where i am happy with how they sound. they always either sound too prominent or dead, or just really artificial.

hats add a bit of texture though to the overall sound, has anyone got any tips for eq'ing them? or other stuff you do with them?

try that: run a kick loop at a given bpm, then play the same loop at the same bpm BUT with a hihat at the half-beat: you will notice that the loop feels faster, more dynamic, even though its at the same tempo! that the thing with hats....it ads the contrast that makes like a pumping feel for the trancers

Lame, cheesy, cliche science fiction samples.

Completely horrible, done to death, should be stopped, but I can't help myself. The ghostly hand of Gene Roddenberry compels me.

hehe, you funny freaks.

@soundseargon.
and open hihat you are talking about is nothing else than a offebeat-gated thin high frequency pad. so, you can exchange the hihat with any other strutured sound like this, means that you can force any other sound to fill the space of the open hihat.
i had nice experience doing that. you will manage to realise more interesting trax if you see a track as a building of frequences and envelelopes.

honestly our music is not very different to britneay spears or marily manson or the rolling stones. because of the drums.
there is always a kick, an open hihat, a closed hihat, a snare and the vocals are the synthlines. listeners and producers always fear to break out of this structure, they all want to eat the same stuff.
