don't use sample cd's for synth sounds !
theres too much "ready-made-psytrance" out there already.

It depends on wether these are single note samples that you can sequence yourself or if they are ready made melodies ...

In a way I agree with illusions.
For drums etc. then samples I feel are fine, stealing kick drums is fine as well (I make my own for the record). As long as you have a good kick and bass with which to make music over its o.k...
However, samples synth sounds are imo much more different. Psy leads and melodies are made special to me by their distinctive sounds, and it adds a greater depth when you know it has been made from scratch by the artist... samples are (IMO) the easy way out. If you can create a god melody then it's almost o.k...
But part of the challenge and creativity of psytrance comes from creating the sound itself... otherwise all leads would practically sound the same...

Some samples are o.k like drums, organic instruments vocal samples etc... but the synthetic sounds are different... that's where the greatest psytrance creativity lies.

Anyway... use multiband compression, distortion (like grungelizer) e.q. to try to save a crap sample...

Peace

Frankly I really don't care what people use. If the music sounds good, I'm happy. Even if everything comes from Psytrance Sounds Volume 37.

In the end, it is up to the artist to make something interesting with them. One of the Shpongle tracks on the first album starts off with a Spectrasonics sample straight from the CD. Does it matter? No because it is an excellent track.

use the envelops in halion to make the sounds thicker, also try to layer them..

layer the original sound with the same sound but with a long attack and maybe some other filter type.. experiment.... pitch em down a octave or two..

3 of the same sound with different filters and filter/amp envelop settings might do the trick aswell

distortion is also good..

hey guys ,

i just got some AKAI Sample CD's ... the nicebytes Synthline series .. if you know ...

some have the Virus and the Korg trinity sounds on them .... ok .. now im using Halion Sampler and i load the samples frm these into halion and prgram the leads accordingly ...

but no matter what i do ... these samples sound really "thin and lifeless" compared to the vsti like vangurad and albino ... when i play the same tunes on them ...

i dont understand , how could these samples suck soo hard ? or maybe thts one of the reasons why you should actually have a hardware synth [ off topic ]

getting back to the point .. most of these are single and mono samples .... dont know what the fuck to be done with them ... or maybe just continue using the vsti [ which sound better anyways ] and chuck these samples ?

I dont think there is anything wrong whit your halion i think the akais suck!!

single note samples are more flexible...

the problem with most sample CDs is that their sounds, trying to be too impressive, wont fit any track (mostly because of lot's of deep bass content)

you'll have to EQ, filter, pitch and everything else at your disposal...

still you'll be working with waht someone else thinks is good... and that may be a problem

i use lots of samples, mostly very simple ones that i tweak to exaustion...

somethings you can have great pathces made in a sample with a very simple waveform, like a sine, saw, and more strange harmonies
