Ok so right now all my work except for some melodies is sample based. I'm just curious how many artists use samples or do you really put the effort in to creating every sound? I kinda find this hard to believe as writing drums alone seems to me to take some time although I'm a newbie at it.
I definitely manipulate and use fx & layering etc. to create my own sounds, but was just curious what do others do?

everything is tools, sometimes this sometimes that.
if you go for a balanced attack you can't go wrong. a bit of analog a bit of digital a bit vsti a bit hardware a bit sampling a bit samplepacks a bit presets a bit modular
focus on the music, but don't go for one dimension only, imo.

Most of the time I use synths, but sometimes when I want a specific sound, particularly if I want to repeat exactly how it sounds, I'll sample it. Or if, for a recent example, I make a bass sound with a CPU-heavy synth that I don't really want eating half the CPU I'll sample it, likewise when using something like a software Minimoog emulation for a bass, where the oscillators will phase after a while making the sound inconsistent.
I have a lot of fun making samples sometimes, even though I tend to use synths much more than samples. Also, its fun to record acoustic sounds, like tinking on a water glass with a fork, or hitting a garbage bin with a piece of wood
Some artists, for example Lustmord, use almost entirely field-recorded material to make their work, which I find just as inspiring as synth-master artists.
Go with what flows you, if you like it, and are having fun, you're doing it right

Mostly I used synths. I sample them to make my own samples. But I also cut up movies for fx samples or voices.

All of my kicks, basslines, leads/melodies, drones, FX patches I make my self. Some drum sounds I also make my self.
Not because I am against using samples, but because I enjoy making them, so much. Also the kinds of sounds I am into, I will make a lot faster programming them my self using synths and moogerfoogers, than endlessly auditioning sample libraries...maybe finding a good sound and then having to rape a new arsehole to the quality of the sound by pitchshifting it and timestretching it.
Hats, crashes, snares, drum loops (from real drum kits), rim shots, are samples and almost always are from NI Maschine.

I create all my sounds except from the percussion´s.
For me the creation of sound´s is one of the most fun and rewarding thing in the track process.
Sometimes i record some samples and use. Its fun when you "passively search" for sounds in the environment to record and use

I like samples because they give you alot of character with a lot less effort. I like synthesis because you can create a character that you are going for from scratch.
The downside to synthesis is that sometimes you have to spend more time to get the exact character you are going for, but on the plus side you have more control.
The downside to samples is that you are primarily stuck with the timbre and waveform of the sound, but with new tools, you can get close to synthesis control of it..
Just my thoughts. |

for me samples are ok, if your doing it to process the sound and not for being lamme...
its great to use with granular processing, create new things with bits of audio, or even slicing drums and create diferent sequence...
if its a creative process, its ok, if its a lamme process when you just want to use them becuase you cant do the elements, or because you want to finish your track faster...
then its bad, really bad, i dont like to see packs being sold to make tracks actualy, i think thats really bad, when i see people suposedly selling "presets" or packs for music i get really upset, because its a "legal" way of turning the whole production thing into a joke...
its intersting to catch a certain sample and manipulate it, change its tempo, its colour, even invert it totaly, and make crazy things of it, but lammeness of using leads, bass and fx you bought online just to build a stereotipical boring track and show to your friends, its one of the most discusting things it can happen, and it happens...
like i written on other thread, some people should really think about why they make music, and if it worths the release, because with so much stuff being released everyday, you should been asking to your self...
why do you botter to release, something thats not interesting? why do you botter to waste time making something that is not relevant?
than... use only the samples if it worth to listen them again (re-processed) |
