Samples + Loops - yay or nay?

hi all,
sorry if this has already been debated here...

what is everyones opinion on the use of samples and loops in trance creation???

the reason i ask is, i have just had a track signed to Demon Tea Records, in this track i have used heaps of different loops and samples, drum loops, horn loops, guitar loops, etc. they have all been effected in some way but are basically still the original sample/loop.

now after much internal debate on the 'original-ness' of my track, i decided to go ahead and have it released, basically because:
its not the tools u use, its how u use them.
the same loops and samples could be given to another artist, with the final results being quite different.

so, what say u?
:)

basicly I find REmade loops much better than just original loops.

it's like - not putting any effort in this area of the track
I'm sure you put efforts in other stuff in the track.

but whatever.

i guess what im really asking then is if u would enjoy the track less if u know it has loops in it.
even if it sounds really good, and it works well with whatever else is happening in the track, does it influence your appreciation of the music...?

Most of the trax today use pre-made loops ( some more some less ) and it is an important tool to make a track. The basic thing is to know where and how to use loops... some times u can make from couple of loops a totally new groove that the listener wouldn't b able to distinguish between the parts of the groove - that is what u have to seek after. Many times I c tracks when loops are taken and not treated ( u don't need all the sounds in the loop, usually... so there is much work in making those disappear - I would heartily recommend the good old 'Recycle' which is amazing little thingy to make old and reused loops brand new ) and those tracks eventually don't give the feel of the togetherness I am talking about.

Ofcourse if u can make your own loops in the quality of existing ones, that would b the best.. But during all the time I am in the electronics I have seen only ONE person that did that ( and still does ) and he is ex-P.Cok Ziv Matushka ( who finally understood that his place is not in the decaying electro industry in IsraHell and went to work in London - Bom Shankar to Ziv!! )

What I awkwardly tried to say is that making your own loops is very important, but it is art of it's own and to master a good level in this u have to do it for a few years and a lot of it.. ;-)

as a listener i don't care if the track has been made of sample CDs or with real aborigens playing the didge :)
if the finished material sounds nice to me - well the artist did a good job in my eyes.
though when i'm trying to create something, i prefer making it "from scratch"..

of course there's a trade-offs : if u use cooked loops, you don't waste the time on creating them,
but maybe somebody else right now is doing the same use of the same loop with the same fx on it.

8-)

p.s. i'm sure, though, it is better using ready loops than ready melodies :)

bom.

i just find it interesting to hear alot of ppl say, samples are f#$ked, be original etc... when id say most professional artists would use samples and loops somewhere in their creations...

take an artist like hux flux for example, now we all know that heaps of those little squeeks and bleeps that are littered throughout the cryptic crunch album are from sample cd's, but its the way they are sequenced together, and the effect/final result that they give.

or logic bomb using samples straight outta fruity loops?

or all those ambient and reverb-y noises that predominate in most minimal tracks?

do u respect them any less for it??? (not a question about taste!)

i certainly dont...

i use samples cause i like em, and to enhance the music that is already there,
i dont write my tracks around the sample.
and it really is FUN finding everyday sounds and turning it into music!!!
or using a killer drum loop that works really well with what u already written!

and isnt that the point of writing music to have fun?

seems a lot of ppl in this scene forget about the 'f' word sometimes...

why ppl gotta be elitists?

k, you're not the only one. I make my own loops also - Philip and Jason can say that I have some wacky and very original drum loops in my track.
