even though this question was inspired from "Samples from Movies" thread @ http://forum.isratrance.com/viewtopic.php/topic/66682/forum/2 i thought this belongs as a separate thread...

isn't trance the only form of music (esp. psytrance) where movie samples are used!

Very rarely have i heard movie samples on other types of music...this is brilliant and superb looking at it from one side, but from the other side it's pretty lame...

The artists who make music are as creative as artists of other forms of music, or scriptwriters in movies, but why can't they create their own memorable lines?

eg: Eskimo - Party Pooper (dunno if it's from a movie)

comments plz...           Interviewer: "So Frank, you have long hair. Does that make you a woman?"
Frank Zappa: "You have a wooden leg. Does that make you a table?"

Movie sampling isn't exclusive to the psytrance scene only. You can find samples from movies in almost every genre of electronic music, and also sometimes in other musical genres (Dream theater used a sample from "Cinema Paradiso" for example).
But, I strongly believe that in the psytrance scene it's being used excessivly.
About the lameness or originality of movie samples, I guess as always it's a matter of context...

b.t.w.
AFAIK the eskimo sample is a real recording from a party (correct me if I'm wrong)           Out Here We're Stoned....

In other genres there are remixes of pop songs and samples used so many times they have become nostalgic to use... There was a whole subgenre of jungle that catered to remixing rap tunes. To be honest sampling has been used in a lot of music since the 70's.

imo samples from movies can not be replaced by samples recorded @ studio. Simply due to the fact that ppl in most cases recognize the vocal line from movie and in the middle of the track they get an "injection" of impressions picked up from a movie. This effect is in fact a small relevation and listener feels like he has heard the tune before, often feeling of a track exactly the same way he felt about the movie.

is it creative? of course not. but it's one of the oldes marketing strategies used in every aspect of our living. Naturaly, music is not an excuse.

of course, this is just mho           "It occurred to me by intuition, and music was the driving force behind that intuition. My discovery was the result of musical perception"

forgive me for being so ignorant; but who the hell are these guys? I was thinking more in terms of small time bands/artists like Pink Floyd, Led Zep, Beatles, AC/DC

okay, my friend:

i compiled some shit for you ( and all the others taht are interested in dark, industrial, electro or terror ebm music ), i selected for use of movie, tv + game samples:

http://www.myspace.com/godmodule

terrific powerful, dark dance sound from yasin + co.

http://www.myspace.com/blc

rising electro label from USA, known for their outstanding "interbreeding" comps.

http://www.myspace.com/velvetacidchrist

bryan erickson defined new levels of the industrial + ebm genre. terrific music..

http://www.myspace.com/mentalloandthefixer

some of the founders of more complex electro. a must !

http://www.myspace.com/nivekogre

the godfathers: skinny puppy ! no words needed for them.

http://www.myspace.com/objectger

rising german darkelectro music from my friend andreas.

FLA , :W:, 242 and other cool bands have not much in the net, you could search in your fav record store or on filesharing for them.

http://www.myspace.com/alphaquadrant

finally my humble attempts on musicmaking, not comparable in quality to above bands, but my aim is not to compete with them instead mix styles as: ambient, electro, darkwave, ebm, industrial, psytrance, techno, gothic....

http://www.myspace.com/ximx

those uīll know probably already

pls. have patience with myspace the site is lame as hell + unstable, cause of too mcuh traffic for the servers i guess.

Dream Theater used samples from movies and documentaries in their album Awake. Very good samples, some examples:

"...But he's the sort who can't know anyone intimately, least of all a woman. He doesn't know what a woman is. He wants you for a possession, something to look at like a painting or an ivory box.
Something to own and to display.
He doesn't want you to be real, or to think or to live. he doesn't love you, but I love you, and I want you to have your own thoughts and ideas and feelings, even when I hold you in my arms.
It's our last chance... it's our last chance..."

"You've got to know who you're dealin' with because, like a stranger, A-heh, just might come in through here with a gun... and then, what
Would you do?"

"Everything is immaterial..."
"n' you know that reality is immaterial."
"this is not reality..."

Respect!           .
...Be gentle with the earth...
...Dance like nobody's watching...
.
...I don't mind not going to Heaven, as long as they've got Coffee in Hell...

Well there are different takes on it.

I read that Winter Demon for instance records all his vocal samples himself in order to get the exact lines/words and intonations etc that he wants.
Kinda overkill if u ask me though, there are so many brilliant movie quotes already out there, and I tend to agree with shamantrixx about the recognition effect. If u wanna set a theme for a tune, using samples that people may recognize is much more stimulating for the mind.

ok, i have another thought...i guess that since psytrance is pretty underground, the usage of samples etc. does not really have much cost & it's simpler to pick lines from a movie than to try and come up with one...

or maybe it would look amateruish if some big band (like Metallica) uses lines from movies in their tracks -- off course as full_on pointed out, there are exceptions; but "Dream Theater" has always been a rather unique band! They don't mind imitating metallica (correct me if i'm wrong here!) since they're big fans of metallica
