Mess around with your software. Record everything you do. Take the audio into a sound editor and tweak everything out to your liking. Create your own sound, it's more fun. Be creative. Just keep at it. Find sounds in tracks that you like and try to learn how they were created. It will be more rewarding as well as spark ideas for other tracks and further your possibilities. There are no real rules to this anyhow.

1) get Reason / Cubase SX
2) get AKAI discs and convert them to wav files
thats it
