Ofcourse.
All pro samplers have pc/mac interfaces which allow you full control of the sampler through your regular pc.
So - sampler = simpler. :)

Well if you buy it second hand and the guy you buy it from doesn't have the software, I think
you can download/buy it from AKAI's site.

thanx guy... i understand the obvious implication that a sampler SAMPLES stuff... but i was trying to wrap my head around the concept of spending over a grand on something that does that when you could just record to a computer... but now i see that the samples can be used like midi instruments? in which case i do see the value of the beast.

i need to win the lottery or recieve some giant inheritance =)

Midi is not the real value, allthough it is a value. If all you'r looking is playing samples as midi instruments you don't need a hardware sampler. The real value is sample editing and real time processing. The most amazing feature I've seen is beat munging. You just load a loop, the sampler immediately tells you what bpm it is, and then you can adjust the bmp in REALTIME (not by timestretch) and the sample quality remains the same. It does that by cutting the sample to small peices and putting them back togather, like recycle does, only real time. Truely amazing.
A sampler gives you the possibility to edit the samples like soudforge does, only you don't have to reload the sample to hear the result. you just play the track again. There are alot of other things too, if you want to see what a sampler is realy capable of, check out an emu ultra6400.
