I got another question for you production wiz kids out there!
Ive been trying to improve my bass, so I decided to give the bassline forum topic another read.
Im interested in what Broken Toy posted:
"For a more pro bass sound , you gotta use either a "synth" that uses samples or actually sample the synth you`re already using."
Any recomendations for a good sampler?
Thanks in advance

I use my samples of ESM in HALion, i find this sampler quite nice, i tried kontakt but it's too "big" for what i look for, too many options i get lost, also tried Directwave wich i found nice too, this last one can sample vsti's directly. |

an issue with external midi devices is latency and some inaccuracy in timing when transmitting midi through your chained devices. this can become audible with fast (16th) basslines for example, audible in the sense that one hears that the bassline is not as tight as possible. therefore many record the (e.g.) bassline and correct these issues on the audio part. but of course, the comment that "you gotta use either a "synth" that uses samples" is not true.
hope this clarified it a bit!
cheers

for a sampler the usual ones:
battery (simple)
kontakt (more advanced)
and i dont know halion.
you could also try guru, but i dont like it for kick/bass, to me it sounds like there is somekind of build-in loudness fx which makes it sound fat but makes it harder to fit other things in the mix with it, but maybe i am wrong with this. nice sampler though for drums.
maybe its good for you to use the search on: fugga, he put a nice set of (mainly) vb-1 bass-samples and some kicks here. files for battery also. and try subconsciousmind, you can download from his site nice bass-samples. try with 16th KbbbKbbbKbbbKbbb, play with the envelopes in the sampler and you get the idea probably pretty fast. enjoy

Hi,
Posted a topic on this some time ago but didn't get any replies... also looking for a good sampler and I wonder what people use?
I've got Halion right now and if you stick a bass sample in it and turn every modification that I can see OFF, it still changes the sound very noticeably compared to the raw sample... pisses me off big time... Brain Hacked, is this something you've experienced??
@vipal: There's no reason to sample the VB1, its already sample based, better to just use the synth as is... and I wouldn't recommend ever using sampler envelopes to play around with the bass...they always suck compared to synth envelopes, much better to get the sound right from the source - the sampler shouldn't process it.

vb1 is sample based
good sampler is fruity loops. also cpu frendly
beside , any synth with retriger osc. is great for stable bass ! like albino or vanguard
ohh , and who say stable bass is better btw ? i usualy like phase bass (osc) to get analog style or just some extra life to the track www.sattelbattle.com

Thanks guys.. think I'll try Battery.. thought it was for drums only but if it works then who cares?
I'm using Cubase only so logic sampler and fruity sampler etc don't do me much good, I was asking about external ones.
@tsabeat: I see what you're saying but isn't the whole idea that even if the synth has retriggering oscillators it still f*** up at times, and obviously even more so on synths that doesn't phase reset...not very tight at all when every other note sounds different, especially when the attack gets squashed. |

@inner demon
when every note sounds a bit dif and the envelopes are not 100% perfect you get some nice dynamics and an analog feel.
a matter of preferance and what you are trying to achieve.

plus 1 @innerdemon
obviously you prefer synthbasslines instead of the ones made in a sampler. but if you do use a sampler, it can be needed to use the envelopes.
i prefer also synthbasslines but in situations where you only have headphones or crappy speakers its nice to work with samples which are soundwise ok.
