Is sampling, or was sampling used in psy?

...and how good will a hardware sampler be for production?
Thanks!

Yes sampling was/is used in psy, an awful lot.
A hardware sampler these days, makes sense if you want to spread (drum) parts on a mixing desk either in a studio or live situation. An old AKAI Sxxx will cost a lot less than a soundcard and even with the small factory RAM, it will do just fine for short samples (drums).
But it will take time to record samples in there and floppy disks/ZIP drives are obsolete these days.

How about an E-MU or an MPC.
Also for more than drums is obsolete?

The new MPC is nice, but you can get a very good soundcard with the same or more output count with that cash.

Some people use the MPC killer called maschine.

I have been thinking as well about getting an old Akai sampler just to see what it can do (differently than the software stuff nowadays) and what the effects are like. But I suspect it is just a lot of hassle for no so much gain. Any thoughts?           soundcloud.com/supergroover

Yup Maschine user here, it rocks.
Had an AKAI S1100. Got it when I was building my first studio as I needed a cheap way to have 10 outputs to feed into my then, analog desk. Back then, having to route sounds from my analog desk to a buss that was going into the inputs of my S1100 and record samples, was a normal every day procedure. Nowdays, with all the flexibility available, it might be a pain to do.
The FX where nice for that time, some classic stuff that you heard in people's records. I would not buy one again today as I mix ITB and that old technology, is just cumbersome when you consider what Maschine does and how it does it. Although, Maschine cannot actually sample without a computer...

Its not the gear that make a psy production "serious", its the person doing it.

Old sampelrs can add special color to the sampled sound, the S1100 e.g seems to be good for that

I bought a S3000XL for cheap a month ago to get my drums and chords through it since I though it would be a good idea for techno/ house with an older vibe
But the 3000XL isn't such a killer thanks to its different DAC, nonetheless hot recorded snares and kicks are great, sampling a snare/clap from a sample pack with record gain turned up high gives nice grit to the snare, fat n' dirty results, chords sometimes too.
but the difference for most sounds is marginal but since I payed only 100€ it is quite ok, would like to have an S1100, atm I'm looking at an EMU esi 32 and casio fz-1 and similar stuff that I could get for a bargain and that add special color to the sound

So as long as you don't want the special mostly muffeled(but also fat) sound from these units I don't see the point in getting one since using it as a real sampler is time consuming, more 'comeplex' and also limiting somehow (could be good too)

in the end it depends on what you want to achieve and if it is useful to use such a device then
