Sample use/abuse question

Minor question but one that definitely makes you think as a producer....

Let's say you are working on a track geared for release and you use some movie samples, a couple quotes and some atmospherics. Midway through writing this particular track, you hear a new released track with the samples that you were intending on using. Now if you change all the samples that you were to use, that would damage the story of the track you were writing. However, if you went ahead and proceeded to finish the track with the existing samples, would it be considered bad form?

I am trying to think of this from a logical perspective... I don't really wish to use samples that have been used, but I would basically have to scrap that work in progress and try something different to keep my originality in all senses. What say you all?? Keep the samples and not worry, or scrap the project and try something else with different samples?           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

I see no problem in using same sample other person used, unless of course its a really overused sample

Sometimes it even makes it more interesting to see what dif artists did to the sample and how it fits in each context

go ahead, with a clear conscience

Personally... I don't think its bad form

you will have interpreted the sample in a different way, and it will have a different feel to it...
Also think of HOW many artists used samples from the Matrix when it came out (hope this isn't the sample you're using) the one with:
"take the blue pill etc."
and
"I couldn't tell you how this is going to end etc" (like Astral Projection)

It should be fine, keep the sample IMO and keep the story!

why dont people make their own samples ?
i have a friend who's doing lots of dubbing and voice work and he's a good actor as well so i get original samples from him .

Not everyone has friends like this! (I make some of my own samples but you can't beat a good quote sometimes).

To answer the first question, as long as when you first used the quote in your track you hadn't heard the released tune, I'd say that from your perspective, your artistic integrity has been preserved.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

Ok... No I wouldn't dare use any matrix samples. It's a sample from 13 ghosts where one of the guys groans and says "Oh Shit" This sample turned up in Azax Syndrom's newest release Replica on the 3 D Vision comp Killer's Inc.           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

I think sometimes hearing things other people did gives you a certain vision on how you can do it and in what way.
It's not about who did it first, after all everyone knows if his artistic integrity as been kept or not...

hey buddy, whats going on ?

i would add some extra fx to the vocals - make it sound a lot different from the original, or from the one azax used.
