Hey Luis when you start recording very cool musicians playing on unique expensive instruments with fucking cool microphones through eye-popping analog chain into a mega sound card followed by an ultra sharp AD converter I guess you'll have to switch to 96 or even higher sample rate

Well, funny, it is actually with that type of gear thatd i am being thought at the moment, the engineer in the studio records everything in 96 khz even if it is going to be converted to a lower sample rate. anyway, he advise me to use higher sample rates if i wanted to, having in mind some disadvantages like "more computer power needed", even thou this kind of information gets to me from experienced engineers, i like to ask other people in my style of music to see how they work.....

I'm interested to know what the specific advantages it gives you, according to him           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

So why do all modern professional and even semi-professional soundcards for 100$ support sample rates up to 192 kHz when nobody uses them?           http://soundcloud.com/aedem

because big samplerate like 192kHz looks professional and cool? It's clear marketing for me           http://www.beatport.com/release/cross-the-atoms/1042450

Yup. There is apparently absolutely no advantage in sample rates higher than 96KHz due to the high-frequency absorption provided by the air itself.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

afaik soundcards have such a high samplerate to avoide aliasing during the ad converting process           http://soundcloud.com/seamoon

Seamoon, what are you going to alias? Nothing you can hear! 44.1khz is enough to avoid aliasing in most instances, and on the very few instances where they are not, a simple lowpass filter will do perfectly. My M-box has a capability of 192khz sampling rate, and it is really nothing but marketing.even 96khz makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever, that is unless you want your cpu to max out...

Well isnīt that the thing with with alias you canīt hear it but because of aliasing it will be heard (High pitched sawtooth waveform for instance). And you donīt need a very steep Lp because of the higher sample rate. But as most ppl have said, i record my stuff at 44.1 canīt find a reason to go higher.           Demand recognition for the Armenian genocide 1915

Why would a higher sample rate avoid aliasing anyway?           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

I was told by a friend who has a lot of experience in signal processing (even built his own mini synth) that using a sample rate of 2x what you will be recording is a sure fire way to avoid aliasing. This would mean that 96kHz would be the best choice (when using a rate of 44.1 to burn to a mp3 cd). This also means that anything above that rate doesn't matter.

That article about Nyquist frequency is really helpful too. Thanks.          http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

96kHz is best for 48kHz. 88,2kHz is best for 44,1kHz.           http://www.beatport.com/release/cross-the-atoms/1042450

What is the point of rendering in 48 when you have a 44.1 file?
Doesn't make sense really. Unless of course you only have 44.1 and need to render in 48...

Then there is the sync issue as well, a 48k file will have different speed when imported into a 44.1 session and if not converted.
