sample rate + latency

just out of curiosity, and this may be quite obvious to many, -  but, why is it that if u work with a higher sample rate (eg. 24 bit/96 khz) then latency on the soundcard is lower?
in my reasoning i thought it would be the reverse - bigger files=more work
i dont have a 24 bit card so any info is appreciated!
thanx in advance:)

I guess it's because the card's DSP have to down-render it's processing capabilities in real time (the DSP in designed to process files in the highest sample rate it's capable of).
Because of that, it takes more time for the DSP to process files in lower sample rates than in higher ones.

PsyTom, what about non-DSP 24 bit cards? - same thing? - they're just designed to work optimally at 24 bit?

Unbalanced, APS card? - u mean EMU or Soundblaster? or neither? - not sure about emu but creative have just released a new 24 bit card, with asio 2 drivers! :)

Reece, if you mean "audigy" then better don't buy it, because the A/D D/A of that card are 18 bit (or 20 - i'm not sure)

about the 24 cards. if we talk about such cards as pulsar/luna, i don't think there should be a significant latency change, because they have different latency compensations in soft and in hard.
about the rest (all of them have some kind of DSP on them), it's a matter of format.
most cards encode the audio into PCM (wav).
go and see the specs of this format and you'll understand why the latency rises if the data is not represented in the most comfortable way..
(casting/conversion - consume CPU)

ciao!

sorry for desinformation, dear people!!!
i wrote some real crap in the previous post... why nobody stopped me?
the card sux, it's true but:
AD/DA's are 24 bit.
recording is 16bit@48khz,
and playback can be 24 bits@96khz.
supposing this card is used for recording....
where will i get 24/96 samples from?
well ... sorry for the mistakes.

What?!?!?!
why would they make a card to playback 24bit but not record it???

seems rather silly to me!

must check the creative website for this one.......

APS is a card that uses the same DSP as sblive.
it works in 16/48khz
the chipset is called emu10k1

reece, yes (i know this info sounds stupid), i verified this via the site.
