im not so sure bout the SAE, its pretty expensive, though i know that those who went there really learnt something. also, they more or less work with Mac only, which is pretty bizar imho... i did a course there once and the teacher was terrible as well as the learning material... don't wanna be too negative though, it's prob a good institute, but not my cup of chai |

hey ppl im here in SAE berlin and i have to say its 100% good education! imo.......:::- the teachers here in berlin know a lot about the topics and are able to give their knowledge in a nice clear way to the students! the sae institute is like a big engineer friends network (positive vibrations in and around the college area) if u have any question ( also the very very very difficult 1s) u always get an answer and a lot of help...: well u see i like it here!
>zebra-n over here in berlin we have windows systems _ but of course in the studio areas &dvd studios we have almost only brand new G 5´s heheheh (i love to work with these monsters_we have about 80 here) and i think its good like this! i dont wanna work in the big studios with windows!! windows sux!!!!!!!!! if u want to work later in any pro studios its impossible not to work with apple! shalom _maurice |

pls dont start the Mac vs PC topic here now, it's been done a million times already, the only thing i was trying to explain is that SAE is not into PC's, which is a bit one track minded to me... cheerio !
i wouldnt mind having a nice G5..hehe |

Autralias the best option as it is the main university, if im not wrong the only one which has a huge campus, the others are all crammed up into like a few small floors in a building.. equip usually sux and is somewhat faulty.. yeh well thas SAE for those who wanna know!

I did the SAE audio engineering diploma in Amsterdam with orik. *wave* . I enjoyed it very much and learned alot. It isn't perfect and all the teachers arn't as good but it does teach you all the basics about analogue and digital audio, recording, microphones, MIDI, audio processing and effecting, sequencing etc ...
You will NOT get as far by just buying gear and reading some docs you find on the Internet. I was making music for 8 years before I went to SAE. I read Sound and Sound magazine (and others) cover to cover every month. I read audio engineering books (Like the Bob Katz book). I scan the net regularly for any interesting articles I can find. I follow quite a few internet forums and run my own production mailinglists (and am a member of several others). And even with all that, about half of what I know comes from that one year course at the SAE.
(The reading articles and buying gear argument sounds to me like a cop out from people that can't afford a proper education or are not as serious about it).
Messing with a Mackie mixer is not the same as learning to use a Neve or an SSL. At the SAE they will teach you about proper signal flow and levels and WHY to do things a certain way. It gives insight that can be applied to everything you do. And as someone else pointed out, once you can use one of these beasts, you can use any console anywhere.
Having said all that, you have to ask yourself what you want. If you only want to make a one pitch 16th note bassline with some random noises on top, don't waste your time and money at SAE.
If you are 100% serious about working with sound in any form (or if you have rich parents , the SAE is a very good basis to work from. It won't guarantee you a job in the industry by any means. Alot of people want to work with sound and there are not many jobs. (Less and less every day).
There are also alot of people that are really not that good and/or not dedicated enough. This is a fact of life. There are alot of disgruntled ex-SAEers. They might have legitimate reasons to be disgruntled but they might just be blaming someone else for the fact they they are just not good enough. Think about it.
I now work as a freelance engineer doing mixing and mastering for TV, adverts, documentaries, film etc but you must realise that I finished top of the class at SAE with an average of 93.3% and I have a pretty impressive CV to back up my proffesional approach to things (I used to have a high-end international IT career before switching to sound stuff). It still took alot of effort getting work sending out literaly more than a 1000 application letters. Of course the market might be different depending on where you (want to) live.
I don't want to discourage anyone but be aware of what you are getting yourself into.
Ok, I'll get off my soap box allready.

Yo guys SAE in the states in not worth it at all !! i had a friend in sae new york and when he saw what we are doing here in london he regreted the time he decided to go to NY
The best place for SAE is Australia and london !!
Ive been in london sae for a year and man the place kicks ass !!
it worked for me cause i didnt know much stuff bfr this..
But Zebra-N..why do you need sae man?
the electronic music creation here sucks BIG time...
the audio enginering diploma kicks ass big time !!but it deals with acoustic stuff most but they also have Logic in the course !

i am not an sae student, but im currently doing a BA in Creative Music Technology in Bath, which i think is much cooler then just an Audio engineer course. it all depends on what do you want to do after the course and what you want to learn. My advice would be go look for a job as a runner(Tea Coffee) you learn in one month more then you learn in a year in SAE(or whatever), in some studios here in bristol you dont need qualifications to get a job as a runner and if you really want it, you get it, so you will make tea and coffee for a while but at least you learn from professionals at their job, no school can teach that.
I must say that the course i am doing now, touches the basics of a lot of diffrent stuff, like Max/MSP, Protools, Production techinics, Game Audio, Multimedia(flash, dvd), Music for films, Art Music,Plugins Programing and more....all in three years. the student decides what he likes best and concentrates on that and hopefully gets better in that praticular subject and takes it further. At least i actually found out what i like and what i hate....
again its all down to what you want to do?? do you really want to sit in a recording studio 12-18hrs a day recording someone else's music?? or is it you just want to do a course to improve your music production? if it is the second choice, how you gonna earn your money??(by selling your music ) would be nice to have a job in the music industry wouldnt it?? and for that you dont need qualifications, you need talent and to be focused on what you want. In 1999 i did a Sound Engineer Course in Tel Aviv, i did it because i thought, yea sounds cool and to be honest i didnt know shit about the music industry, the only thing i realised after that course is that a Sound Engineer i DONT want to be(and a little bit more).
Took me another 4 years to find what i like and things progress slowly, but i must say the course i did really opened my eyes on subjects i did not know that excist and did not know that i can actually make money in lot of diffrent ways and still work with music.
Dont know if SAE good or bad, but keep your eyes open there are more institutes that not fall from SAE which actually do more interesting courses. |

hi, did the electronic music production course at sae in amsterdam. 6 months, two evenings a week, for 3 hours or so. classroomteaching. 1800 euro. nice teacher but not really really an electronic music person. started from scratch there (for example there i heard for the first time what midi is), and learned a lot. some fellow-students with more musical background were quite frustrated about the level, (and sometimes the classes were hilarical bad, but these were really exceptions). after a few weeks the class went from 20 to ten people. the rest of the students disappeared.
my idea was to follow a short course as a preparation for making tracks in cubase. i would not do it again this way. now i am lucky by having someone who released some cd's in psytrance as my teacher, in my house on my computer. i just pay him by the hour. works much better offcourse. on the other hand sae prepared me also to have a good start with my teacher. so i would say its about what you want. cannot advice you what to do if you want to be studio-professional. if you just want to make nice psytracks i think you learn more on this board then at Sae. maybe then spend your money on a personal teacher. |

I've almost finished an advanced diploma at SAE here in Melbourne, and I must say It has been great for me. I've met a lot of like-minded people and learnt a hell of a lot about sound, but I did do a lot of my own studying in my own time, as I thought the course was pretty lite on in terms of hours...
But all in all I am very glad I saved up and did the course as it really cemented certain things in my head which I'm pretty sure I'll never forget now. |
