Except of course the day it gets removed from Youtube or you by some reason do not have a fast Internet connection/ no connection to the server. |

Thankfully the quality of MP3s is so good these days that unless someone REALLY fucks up and makes a 96 KBPS mp3 or something....you can't tell the difference between the original and an MP3.
True story...the other day I found a track on youtube but couldn't find a good version of it elsewhere so I used video2mp3.net and grabbed it off youtube and dropped it in my set for a placeholder.
A couple days later I ended up finding a FLAC version. Played it alongside the youtube rip and I couldn't hear a bit of difference at all.....

I have Adam A7x monitors and over $1k worth of ATX acoustic treatment panels in a pretty decent room.
Also, did a mp3 test at the last show my girlfriend and I threw and we had a really nice KV2 rig to test it on. same results. can't tell the difference.
The quickest way to know someone is full of shit is to hear them say they can tell the difference between an MP3 (of sufficient quality of course) and a FLAC/WAV

depends how it s encoded.. the frequencies response are not the same too..so some ppl might spot it .
there is also placebo effect..they might think they ear difference, only blind test is valid |

i doubt as well that many people could tell the difference, but some with very well trained ear could probably hear it..maybe as much as there are proper encoded high quality mp3s out there..

mp3s became better indeed, that's good. but the ceiling here isnt only human perception but the audio systems we use.
u will definitely hear the difference with hi end gear. properly tuned audio source + $8k DAC + $5K speakers + according cables etc will tell u the truth in no time. most of the people just dont use such systems, vast majority of listeners didnt even had a chance to meet high end audiophile systems of that cost.
$1k studio monitors is just a start.
there was a video which i cant find where they gathered several sound engineers and made them choose blindly what is being played wave or mp3 and the results were pretty randomly 50/50, so yes, mp3 became better indeed

Blind tests are only relevant when you are talking about unknown recordings (stuff you do not have a point of reference to). If you talk about a recording you have heard on hundreds of sound systems does not require a blind test: the difference between mp3 and FLAC is obvious in those cases when you have real equipment. |
