We produce prog! We being Gravity South, travis (torabisu) and myself, often playing prog at the parties on the "chill" floor and producing as much of it as our day jobs allow (sigh, when is that lottery win coming thru!)
Find us here: http://www.gravitysouth.com
Find me here too: http://www.beatsfactory.com
Prog available on both sites, I'm getting my first intl. release in Aug/Sep on Blue Tunes Recordings the compilation is called Progressive Movement - my release is under the name Blue Nova.
We're here, gathering momentum, I think the prog sound is going to get more and more exposure on the big rigs in the local scene.

You raise an interesting point, as with other genre's, the style of "prog" is extremely broad, and the subjective meaning of it to people even more broad.
With that in mind, I'll tell you what it means to me, and how I define whether I feel like I'm producing something 'prog' as oppose to something 'psy'
1) The most obvious one that comes to mind is tempo. This is of course personal, but as soon as it drops below 136/135bpm it becomes more prog.
2) The arrangement is somehow more spacious, as you say it's more minimal. because it's less busy overall what is there has more space to breathe.
3) the breakdowns and buildups are different, sometimes slightly sometimes more distinct. On the whole I think prog sound lends itself better to longer, spacey breaks, where you can build in moments of tension and release over a long period of time.
4) prog is more liquid-like, makes you move your hips more than psy which is more machine-like and gets your limbs moving in a jackhammer motion ;-) broadly speaking this could be due to the different structure between the basslines of the 2 styles?
These are just a couple that come to mind, do they make any sense and do you guys have any to add?
Cheers,
OH, and to answer your question, the music I like to make is in the tempo range of 125-135 bpm, interesting percussion patterns, lots of use of reverb to create a deep sense of space, while still keeping it spacious and getting the whole arrangement to breathe and pulse in time with the tempo.... I hope that helps, an audio snippet would probably explain it better, http://www.beatsfactory.com if you're interested it's all there
cheers again!
