Review:

S>Range – wrestled, reconfigured and remixed!

With his creative outlet S>Range, Anthony Sillfors was one of Sweden’s leading exports in the years following the millennium… His two albums 2001 and Space were both critically acclaimed and he sold out gigs all over the world… Furthermore he has released a bunch of 12-inches and loads of compilation tracks… It’s been a while since I’ve heard new stuff from the D.O.S. Mission Control Studios though – but that’s all about to change now… The Remixes are here!

These mixes and remixes are based on the Another Theory album due for release on 20th February 2006 on Liquid Records… Let’s take a closer look at the tracks on the CD maxi…

Let me take you thru the tracks…

#01: S>Range – Another Theory (Chromosome Remix) [145 BPM]
Chromosome is Swedish producer Anders Nilsson and this remix stays pretty true to the original with those floating, enchanting melodies + the fast-paced, twirling and eventually uplifting morning trance qualities… Yeah, this is both a hands-in-the-air type progressive morning belcher – and a well-crafted piece of music fitted for home-listening… Especially the last part of the track is pretty damn nice… Well, I’ve not quite come to terms with the cheesy singing yet, but it’s brief and I’m willing to let them slide… This one will impress the ladies! All in all, this is a solid tune!

#02: S>Range – Another Theory (Big Deal Remix) [145 BPM]
Big Deal is a new Swedish high-profile collaboration between Anthony Sillfors and Jonas Pettersson aka. Tranan (and one half of Logic Bomb!). And yeah, you’ve guessed it – with the help of Tranan this remix is by far the most psychedelic track featured here… The melodic lead + part of the rhythm section + the samples from the original are still here, but the acid-level has been raised dramatically… Just the way I like it! Obviously we’re still in morning trance territory, but we’re closer to psytrance than to progressive trance now… I like it for the most part – the guitars didn’t do much for me at first, but I got over it… This one will impress your hippie mates! Sweet track!

#03: S>Range – Stand By (Ultra Violet Mix) [142 BPM]
Here’s another re-make of a track from the Another Theory album to be released in a less than a month from now... This is pretty solid, groovy progressive trance – made for early mornings! Tight, rich percussion laid on top a trademark S>Range melodic lead + the obligatory sci-fi samples… Sure it’s nice, but I was kinda hoping for something fresher… Can’t put my finger on it, but there’s just something missing here… But hey – it’s nice and well-polished and will probably impress your neighbours even when played loud! Not bad, but not great either…

#04: S>Range – Spaced Out All Day (Forever Mix) [142 BPM]
This track was originally featured on the 2003 album Space released by Spiral Trax… I don’t remember the track that well, as I don’t own the album – so I can’t really tell you how much was changed for this 2006 mix… What I can tell you though, is that this is made by Anthony himself – and of course it’s riddled with sci-fi samples… This is retro progressive trance – with a big splash of morning glory thrown in to please the kids… Generally I like it – especially the melody line half-way through – but we’re not exactly re-inventing the wheel here… Large parts of this sound exactly as S>Range did five years ago… And that bores me! There are good parts yes, but not enough! This one will impress your trekkie-mates!

#05: S>Range – Technical Support (Back Up Mix) [142 BPM]
“I know you’re gonna dig this!” Another 2006 remake of a track from the forthcoming album – made by Anthony himself… And now we’re getting somewhere! Whilst kept within a framework of progressive and uplifting morning trance, this track draws on a number of musical influences… From dub & breakz to banging acid-ridden psytrance… A musical hybrid showcasing the diverse talent of Mr. Sillfors… Yes, we’re back on track, and this is just what the good doctor ordered… This one will impress everyone! Hands down the best track here!

#06: S>Range – Another Theory (Ambient Mix) [100 BPM]
“There is a theory, which states that if ever anyone discovers what the universe if for, and why it’s here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced with something even more bizarrely inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened!” Like a mini album, this CDM closes with a downbeat tune… Again made by Anthony himself, this uses smaller fragments from the original – most notable is the Douglas Adams quote… This is a nice mixture of floating ambient soundscapes and faster downbeat passages… It’s both dubby, melodic and dreamy… This one will impress your mom! Pretty nice, but nothing spectacular…

Let me take you thru the tracks…

#01: S>Range – Another Theory (Chromosome Remix) [145 BPM]

See review above…

#04: S>Range – Welcome To Paradise (HON Circle Mix) [142 BPM]
This track is exclusive to the vinyl release – and is a mix to the original which was released on the 2005 Liquid Records compilation Build Your Own Reactor… I wasn’t too impressed by that one, and sadly this remake still has the cheesy vocals from the original… But hey, just like the original, this is a pretty solid progressive/morning cross-over tune… The epic passages strike a notable contrast to the more aggressive, arpeggio synth-lines… Pretty nice, but doesn’t really add much to the original tune. Will most definitely impress your clubbing mates…

Closing statement:

With Another Theory (The Remixes) we get a mouth-watering taste of what to expect on the upcoming S>Range album. The best tracks of the album have been wrestled, configured and tweaked… That leaves us with a bunch of remixes and remakes ranging from deep, sweaty progressive trance to uplifting, joyous morning tunes + of course a downbeat track to dull the senses… A couple of Anthony’s own remakes don’t exactly rub me the right way, but I still think that both of these released deliver the ever sought-after value for money…

Both the CDM and the vinyl have exclusive content and the CDM definitely wins that little internal battle - based purely on the ‘Back Up Mix’ which is a really winner! Recommended to S>Range fans and to fans of progressive/morning crossover trance… Enjoy!

Arrived this morning!
Excellent stuff here with enough variety to suit a few tastes and good enough to encourage me to order the album for sure!!

The psy-chill track(6) is very nice, but tracks 2(Big Deal rmx) & 5(Back Up mix) are the standout tracks here for me. They are more psychedelic and there's more going on to hold your interest.

Congratulations Anthony!!! Can't wait for the album now!!!           If you point your cart North,
when you want to go South,
How will you find The Way?

Oh ok I'll be honest, having spent a bit of my djing past in the "hands-in-the-air" uplifting trance scene, I quite like the Chromosome remix as well......... but keep it quiet!!!           If you point your cart North,
