Yeah, what to do, Russian illegal download sites are hard to stop, I have writen google to ask them to lower them in the search result, and I'll see what else I can do, but like P2P its good publicity in way, they kept all artist and label names the same, but its just shit to see good quality mp3 for free ---now some of you are going to look for it and download no???-- So i am not going to specify the website, Cytopia.org has such low prices people with a heart should buy the music they like

I'm not trying to defend Russian site or anything like that. However... I would like to remind you that there is no law against sharing! If I buy your CD and I'm willing to share it with my friends there is neither legal nor ethical law against such action.
Also if you have made your music for the joy of music you should be kind of proud to see your music spreading on the web. Bad music ends in "recycle bin" and nobody cares about sharing it.
If you care about money... than you're in the wrong place. Music was for ages and ages free tool that people used to sync with other people and to harmonize their lives by dancing around the fire to the native beats. It is only in the last 70 years that musicians sold their soul and industrialized music for little fame and few $. Now it's not free!... we have to pay for it! Now it's divided into endless genres and so it divides people rather than harmonizing them. Once a great and free tool has become a form of further enslavement.
People with heart should not charge money for anything! That's how we get caught in this stupid position with music in the first place.

im sure u havent spend 10000e or more in ur studio and used a few thousand hours of ur life in the studio making music just to see that all that can be downloaded free over the net!
if we were in a planet that music is free of charge than nobody would mind but everybody would feel bad to pay for the music they like... unfortunately its the opposite and artist must live u know we are not in the era of giving tomatoes and taking potatoes we are in the era of giving tomatoes and taking money cos i seeded them growth them water them cut them etc... until they get to be bought and eated by u!
i spend alot of money on those tomatoes if i give them for free just cos i like tomatoes and love people getting my goods for free than i will die sooner or later and u will not eat any more tomatoes in the long run!
damn where did i think of that story!

There are actually laws against sharing, but I do see your point. I can see both sides to this, but certainly do not appreciate seeing my own work, with a copyrighted logo next to it to saying its copyrighted to another company that certainly did not produce, master nor publish the work to begin with.
We provide an online service, and if everyone were to share all, then without income, we could never pay the bills and continue my service.
I disagree one with heart should never charge for anything, how would you support youself if you never got paid for your job? What about musicians, should none of them be professional? D should restaurants make all their food free, and should all forms of entertainment be free? Should all books and art be free?
The position that everything should be free is naive, fair pricing is important; some things just do cost money for the effort that has been put into it, simple as that.

copy paste from Carbon Based Lifeforms site:
If you downloaded our music on p2p or otherwise
and still want to pay us, feel free to donate.
now that's very different approach and in my opinion a much better one.
yes... I have spent considerable amount of money on studio equipment and I don't expect that the "world" should pay me back just because I've used that equipment to make music.
I don't believe that any of received an order to produce music for the world. When you order your meal in a restaurant it's perfectly reasonable to pay for it. When you request something to be done just for you than it should be paid. In contrast to that when you do it because you feel like doing it and nobody had request that you do it... well I don't see the reason and foundations for any kind of expectations.
Just like you take a walk in the park when you feel like walking. You also have to buy the tennis shoes for walking but you don't expect the world to pay you for that walk. Why should music be any different from that? If I ask you to come in my park and walk for a while than you have every reason to expect payment or any other form of compensation for your effort. Since nobody here is taking any requests from auditorium I see no point in complaining. Your examples with restaurants and tomatoes simply make no sense. I'll rather share extra tomatoes than let them go to waste. If I make a lot of extra tomatoes without anyone asking me to do so what I really have done is production of wealth where tomatoes are merely an instrument for acquiring that wealth. If that is the case there is no ethical foundations to respect you as a person who is producing tomatoes. We should think of you as you are... person who desires wealth.
ps: I do see difference between sharing music with friends and publishing other peoples music on a public web site! As I said in the first post I don't think that sites like that are ethical at all. They probably benefit from bandwidith or from adds. So in that manner such an act is even worse than expecting money for your music!!! Excuse me, but what's so infuriating in it? Is it the truth of it or is there some rational or logical inaccuracy to it?
Coca cola is a company that's producing profit. They don't give a shit about the quality of your life nor they are working for the advancement of drinks in general. The name of the game is to make a largest profit for smallest amount of investment and effort. Where exactly in that sense do you see the distinction between producing coca cola and producing music? They both end up on shelves with a brand name and price attached. Or do they not?

So you do on a small scale what coca cola is doing on grand scale. You say you strive to make end of it and that's exactly what qualifies you in the same category with coca cola. As long as you attach the price to your music it forms your music to the extent that it ceases to be art. You expect money - "they" expect certain forms. Voila.. we got genres of music defined by consumers and obeyed by the "artists".
If you can't understand this it's only because you don't want to understand it. Otherwise it's quite straightforward and simple.

your ideas on a philosophical level are all nice and enlightened, but in the real world they just dont work.
sure you can make art as a hobby, but chances are your art will be on the level of a hobby.
if the listener wants something proffesional then it takes a profesional to make it don't you think?
