I do have a work laptop where I cannot install extra software, especially software which requires license. I am not willing to buy just another laptop for music production, so I came up with an idea of booting 2nd OS from Universal Serial Bus/Network drive for music production whenever I need.

I would appreciate your experience or views on following.

-Is Universal Serial Bus or Network drive fast enough to run Digital Audio Workstation? As far as I understand Virtual Studio Technology instruments are not the problem as they are used from RAM memory, but what about the real time recording
-Is it even possible run OS from network drive? If I connect Network Hard Drive to a computer with RJ45 straight through cable. I know about installing OS via LAN, but what about the main usage of OS?
-Is it possible to run MAC OS X from external HDD?
-If I use several Universal Serial Bus devices, do the all devices works as max bandwidth or is the bandwidth shared with all devices

This all depends on what you want to do, just try it ... but i promise u it wont be fast.

You can't boot from network shares the traditional way (your bios can't handle it), apart if you setup a PXE boot environment, but then you have other issues with the size of the system you want to boot that must be smaller than guest RAM memory. I use it but to start rescue OS's for various diagnostics/repairs, or to boot a diskless computer (thinclient style).
Also, USB 2.0 has teoretically 480Mbps (60Mb) of bandwith, shared between ports, but maybe your limit is on the disk controller or usb-to-ide/sata bridge, so if you hit 25-30Mb/s you are lucky.
Check if you have an eSata port on this laptop, in this case would be very useful to gain a lower latecy in I/O.           http://soundcloud.com/mosfat/
