Just wondering how many of you work like running your mixes [sequencer output, synth output etc...] to an outboard recorder like a DAT? whether analog mixer or digital doesnt matter.
There seemes to be HEAPS of advantages regarding the 'hands on approach' to semi live mixes... as long as all the fussy parts are pre sequenced/automated in the sequencer.
what i'm getting at mixing a track this way lets you have natural movement over eq's and fx levels without getting ahernia automating
As with most producers, i'm guessing everything ends up in the sequencer and the master file is simply an exported audio file, so who does it other ways?
10x cheers maties!

sometimes I'm recording my console output - which sums 2 stereo audio channel groups.
the analog sum give me around 1 or 2 dB headroom easily.
no DAT here though.

Hey trip , if you don't have DAT where do you record your console to ??? back to the computer ,if so , soesn't you loose all the analog sound you gain by routing it trough the console?
If the idea is gaining some analog sound I think the soundcard's convertors ruin the all idea !!!!
If it's for using the hardware console for mixing thats something else.

motorik I gain more than I lose
the final mix is done on the desk - therefor it is analog.
I trust my A/D converters to do a good recording session.

yup trip, but you said it yourself you are depending on your A/D convertors , and it doesn't matter how good they are you still
take it back to Digital so you loose a lot from what you gained unlike if you record it to DAT and then you gain the all analog sound from your console.

hey droo
yes i used to do this... and by the way motorik dat is digital and it is 16bit digital so by recording back into the computer with a really good a/d at 24 bit then u will loose less than with a 16bit dat...
it is hard question... most of the time ur sequencer should be able to handle a stereo feed back into it at the same time as the track, so it would come down to whether the convertors on your dat (or the dat u want to buy) are better than ur soundcards.... i would think not on a domestic dat machine but if you had a big dollar studio dat (say like 4000-5000 au worth) then u might get better sound, but its still 16 bit... i think it would be cheaper to buy a second computer and a good interface with 24 bit external convertors than to buy a dat... and heaps more practical (burn to cd as wav's etc..)
as u would know droo studios much prefer wavs than dats cos there is a high level of errors on dat tapes...
u should buy a laptop for live dude and a tascam 24 bit or similar and use this to record from ur console |
