On Monday 29th October the new album by Pitch Black, "Rude Mechanicals" comes out in Europe and America on Dubmission Records through Arabesque Distribution and iTunes, Beatport et al.

Their fourth and possibly their best album so far, “Rude Mechanicals” embraces all that is good about dance music and electronica and spices it up with the trademark Pitch Black blend of echoes, delays and deep, fat basslines.

Mike and Paddy have always been avowed fans of music in general (as opposed to any one style in particular), and it certainly shows here: the album kicks off with the lush “South of the Line” before dubbing it out, year 3000 style, with “1000 Mile Drift”. “Sonic Colonic” kicks the tempo up a gear as the only real four-to-the-floor stomper on the album. “Bird Soul” reminds one that Paddy Free spent years producing Salmonella Dub, as it takes their guitar driven drum and bass style and wraps it in an ambient dub envelope.

“Harmonia” is an exquisite piece of electronica, reminiscent of Speedy J or Black Dog. It is followed by “Rude Mechanicals”, which marks a departure from the norm for the boys, featuring rapper KP from the infamous Sunshine Soundsystem, who waxes lyrical about the destruction being wrought on the planet by our environmental ignorance and general greed. “Fragile Ladders” provides some much needed breathing space before “Please Leave Quietly” destroys what is left of the bass speakers!

Rude Mechanicals is a genre hopping excursion in sound, heaving with warm basslines and complex rhythm’s, topped up by haunting melodies and, for a change, cutting social commentary. To adapt a previous quote about them, this album is like “Underworld meets King Tubby”, in all the best ways possible ………………………………….

But don't just take my word for it - there is a crudely mixed (sorry!) 4 track sampler to download from http://download.yousendit.com/F53C95BD6B7A2170 (please feel free to post this track somewhere more permanent if you like - not exactly as tech literate as I would like to be!) or you can watch the video for the first single in NZ at

Plus the rest of the tracks are previewable in the Beatport player on their website - www.pitchblack.co.nz.

oh my! this exceeded my high and overly optimistic expectations of pitch black dubby goodness... a definite highlight this year!           "The sparrow is sorry for the peacock for the burden of its tail" -Rabindranath Tagore

Yes, I loved this album. A marked progression for Pitch Black, and a great release from artists who really are at the top of their genre.

This deserves some attention!

I'd never really listened to Pitch Black until I hit the samples for this new album. I can only say that I wish I had sampled them sooner. I'll start with "Rude Mechanicals" and work my way backwards unless anyone wants to suggest a best album to start with.
