rubix qube - saturate

After 2 successful albums "Ulterior Motives" (Rubix Qube) and "Counter Freak" (Biorhythm) Kieron Grieve is back with a new EP - "Saturate" just released by the infamous MMD Records, south africa. Lets get started with the tracks:

track 1:

1. Rubix Qube - Saturate [145 BPM] - this one starts off in a glitchy manner, kind of epic like principles of flight at times.. but things turn sour as they often do and your left to face the calm, tight, funky beat - but there is something all very surreal about. awesome introduction to a very tight mean bassline. in typical rubix qube fashion this one finally bleeps out to all chaos! phasers, lazers freak out in syncrhonized harmony and this monster just goes on! very groovy and engaging track this - certainly lives up to the expectation of a title track. the climax at 1.40 is a pure pleasure and the melody that arises a bit later is absolutely sick. his melody structures are always engaging and put me in mind of the likes of scorb. love the big warm pads that give the track just the right touch. [9/10]

2. rubix qube vs xatrik - conan the barbarian [145 bpm]: this beastly collaberation is all about the business. is has some seriously phat evil melodies happening. all metheads will love the crushing guitar riffs. the bit around 3.15 is totally sick - the track going into a death stomp - melodies being totally glitched and drawn out. something similar to biorhythm this will be a crowd pleaser for sure.with a threatening demeanor this track will cause one hell of a frenzy on the dance floor. the samples i feel give this some extra sharp teeth:
intro sample:
"we will all drown in lakes of blood (!), now they will know why they are afraid of the dark, now they will learn why they fear the night'
the second voice sample near the end :
" 'Konan! what is best in life?' - ' To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear their lamentation' - absolutely sick - long live conan! towards the end you can hear the distinct battle between the classic xatrik and rubix qube sounds, totally ripped. very playful and a complete monster of a groover. all topped with a wonderfully theatrical feel. [8.5/10]

3. rubix qube vs luna - tia [147 bpm]: luna is the other mind along with rubix qube involved in the biorhythm project. 'tia' stads for 'this is africa'. starts off with a glitchy little melody playing on some thick warm pads. the track builds in a tight controlled way, lending it a very sinister feel. soon enough we are moving forward full steam ahead. the sounds keep getting meaner and the whole percussion tighter. the melody thats pushed forward is pretty slick - it literally feels like an angry tentacled monster reaches out of the speaker to get you. this is a very intense piece of music not meant for the faint hearted - it definitely showcases a darker more introspective sound with the melodies always pushing you on. the breaks are well executed where every build up is milked for all its juice until the melody is literally squeeling under the pressure. again as the track moves forward you hear snippets of the more pronounced rubix qube melody. but on the whole this story is grim to the bone and will be a good track for keeping party goers going. sound is very reminscent of the shift sound around the time he released 'byte me'. [8/10]

4. rubix qube vs rabdom l vs luna - the full moon [145 bpm]: this is a super team of sorts making it together, pretty much biorhythm and rabdom l. for those not familiar with rabdom l, brace yourselves! from the very get go you know this is going to be a very grim, hellishly intense, full to the brim with power kind of ride. the chemistry between the 3 artists is awesome - you can pick out their touches. epic melodies backed with beefy sleezy melodies. actually reminds me of artifakt at time. by -4.15 the melody just oozes emotion and subsequently explodes into chaos. the soundscapes are well executed and the whole track has such an epic feel to it, that you have to admire awesome work they have done on making this atmospheric. not to take anything from this monster - as it explodes towards the end - things go down a very deranged path.[10/10]

5. soundproof - maximal - here we see another side to rubix qube in the form of his glitchy techno project - soundproof. one thing is for sure - the phat basslines definitely maintain their place. this is not what i normally listen to but the track certainly picks it up and opens up to more layers.i like the way the track sort of bounces its way back around 2.15 . again this puts me in the mind of artifakt again. very heavy melody, and spooky glitchy melodies the kind that make you wonder what the hell was that! . this is definitely one for the tech headz out there. you can really appreciate the high level of production with sounds being so crisply spread out - and the signature use of those ethereal warm pads.the guitar samples present an interesting twist from where the track comes back yelling in all its phat glory.

conclusion: this is a hefty 5 track ep that gives you some very fat, epic and very twisted music. you have a good balance of crowd pleasing moments and some more introspective moments as well. all in all i think rubix qube has done an awesome job with this monster ep. the solo effort is one of the highlights and soundproof puts forth an interesting new side to the sound. the collaberations are well done with each act lending the work their flavor. awesome work once again by mmd in keeping up with the impressive string of digital releases. sincerely hope that there is a full length album on the cards somewhere down the road . big up to everyone involved with this awesome release!

Great EP and massive tune. Keep up the good work.           Mushrooms make you do crazy stuff. Look at Mario he jumps on animal heads and fights with dragons.
