Upgrading my home studio...

I have heard about routing audio through a peice of hardware to enhance the sound( due to the Preamp? ) but I can not find any details about this...
Can you help me?

I am looking into getting some new gear and would like to make this happen for about $200
Any suggestions?

I am use'in a PC tower (for now)
I have a Fire box sound card
Cubese sx3 Rewired with Reason 4
Axiom 25 and NANO Kontrol

Thinking about buy'in a :
PreSonus TubePre
or
PreSonus COMP16 Compressor
or
Focusrite Liquid Mix 16 Firewire Audio Processor

Is this the correct type of hardware I'm looking for?

Forum links I should read?

Thank you for your suggestions and help.

I was wondering these things about a year ago, asked so many sound engineers, after they bulshitted me they told me

-routing to hardware 2 improve quality & depht is often referred to summing boxes (dangerous, neve 8816 &stuff like that) & expensive analog gear, very expensive
and unless u got top a/d D/a converters and well treated room u can barely hear difference

Poor wise man's advice will be to get some serious powered plugins (UAD,liquid mix, duende ecc..)
and spend more in audio engineering books& courses than in gear

don't take these words as law just my lil experience

As PsyGalaxy pointed, u need HIGH bucks to get that sound out of the DAW.

BTW - get a newer Cubase before anything else.           https://www.facebook.com/BiijahRecords

A trick I do sometimes is to make a synth part, then I record the synth part from the speakers with a microphone placed in the middle of the room or wherever and then I layer the recorded part with the original synth part. It seems to add some "realness" to the sound.           ~Airyck~

Thanks for your responces...

PsyGalaXy , I am looking into getting the Liquid mix plugin with that little break out box thing, have you used it before?
Looks like a cool peice to add to the collection.

Diogo_c , I have been use'in sx3 because I had a bunch of Waves Mastering plug-ins that were Direct x plugins , newer versions of Cubase do not use direct x plug-ins. But I just got all the same plug-ins in VST, so I could use a newer version of Cubase but is it worth my time to change over?

Thanx again!           \\\"Invoking the inner dancing buddha with future frequencies from beyond\\\" ~GyPsy

I would think that would create a lot of sound cancelation psylevation ...
I have heared about similar tricks with bass lines but always eqing them to upper and lower freq's to give more controll but never with synth lines just layered.

Never owned it, but a friend owns it and i've tested many times
it's all about emulation of classic outboard, naturally it isn't far the same thing (if u know how real models sounds), if u never hear the real version it's pretty funny thing
EQ and Compressors only up to 32 instances togheter.
I remember shelving eqs are so sweet in certain emulations
In the first times my frend told me it had very bad problems whit the FireWIre chipset, but i guess they are resolved now, 2 years later.
External unit it's good thing 4 me, gives more praticity to use and got meters

Consider also SSL Duende MINI & UAD I they're about the same price range.

UAD comes whit many FUCKING GOOD PLUGZ not only channel strips (nigel reverb, roland dimensionII chorus, space echo ecc)
Pultec eq's emulation it's amazing and they got shit load of gutty compressors, trust me they're Ferrari

Only bad thing is price..like all good things

Great idea!! that'll work like a "crush" mic. Try putting some "new york" compression on it when you layer it in, definitely will help add the "realness" to it, but use it sparingly. Too much is easily heard.
