hmm for the reverb thing... for mixing basic reverb on HH´s i read a tutorial.

add reverb to your hihats (send effects). you should NOT hear a difference in the MIX. but when taking away the reverb you should feel there is somthing missing in the mix. this way you add the right amount of "realistic reverb"
i dont know how a bigger room would affect this method much. that any untreated room would affect this method is clear, im talking about treated small rooms vs treated big rooms.          www.soundcloud.com/orgytime

For cheap solutions (I don't know how effective they are but they should do an ok job).

Bass traps (set of 2) at 59euros:

Wall foam (1000x1000x40mm) at 9.90euros:

Peace out.

Bass traps effectively "absorb" bass. The basic two big bass traps and covered from and back walls will work fine to start with.
After that you can spend some more on http://www.thomann.de/gr/the_takustik_sa2_ras_schallabsorber.htm

and a couple of http://www.thomann.de/gr/the_takustik_sd2_rasdiffusor.htm

Add a nice Persian carpet (or cheap IKEA one, as the originals are more expensive than the whole acoustic kit, put together... and you're set!

Peace out.

Before getting "Noppenschaum" I would invest in better material with a higher density. e.g :

oh yeah a room only with noppenschaum also known as tittenschaum will make it worse (boomy, rumbly and boxy) at any case,if you have problems with lows - and this is most often the case.
If your room is treated properly according to its size etc than the next or last stage could be noppenschaum,if you find out that your highs reflect in some angles or walls. In the near of the monitors its often the case, depending how much away they stand from a wall.

1. Room that is large enough (try avoiding square rooms)

2. Speaker and desk placement. Find the sweet spot.

3. Absorbtion- massive traps in corners, panel traps on side walls to stop early reflections, acoustic cloud on the ceiling over your head

4. Diffusion- not essential but I find it very very usefull.

5. Find good monitors according to your room size.

with this cheap "noppenschaum" i have had bad experience. everything sounded just damped.
like a strange LP filter XD. but sure, i think its better than a totally untreated room.           www.soundcloud.com/orgytime

orgytime this is because it has absorbed only highs and mids.Again,it wont make your room anyhow better with it,only with it.No chance and 100%.
If somebody got a money budget only for that(noppenschaum/tittenschaum) do yourself a favour and spend it for anything else.

Tittenschaum doesn't absorb the lows ,the lows got more energy and need more density(bass traps).
It absorbs from the lows like nothing or by far not enough so to say, they will still reflect.
It's better to keep in mind it does not absorb lows.Actually you described it well, strange lp filter - highs and mids were dampend or absorbed.

@ danfoss - no one mentioned so far your first point ,I only mean the sentence in your brackets(beause small rooms are also able to make'em properly treated). It is almost correct.Parallel walls are also a problem.A square is rarely the case.If the walls are uneven its always better.Chances are higher to not have that much standing waves (without any treatment I mean) or to get it fixed faster.

I had a square room once..it was pretty dificult to treat.

Of course that the small rooms can sound great if treated properly, wihtout a doubt. But people often put to large speakers in that kind of room, or treat only with acoustic foam, and get that boomy feeling.
Or sometimes wrap basstraps in plastic etc.
