buy rockwool, wood, tissu and make your own basstraps, chepeast and the most efficent, don't buy foam its shit unless you buy the expensive stuff.           On 2011-03-08 23:13, moki wrote:

check out my thread (photos)
http://forum.isratrance.com/2500-to-waste-need-help-xd/page5/
(my basstrap project was about 700€)

make sure the basstraps are thick enough.
if you will not place the whole room, just cover the first mirror/reflection points to start, that will tighten up your stereo image alot!
if you want improve your bass, you have to cover the corners too... more money ...

i think if you have some money to spend maybe buy just the basstraps and make all broadband absorbers,i will do that in my new room, why buying the bass trap? cause standart pannel are not as effective as basstraps with membrane in the low but maybe it possible to make them by yourself have no idea .
there is some basstraps with coefficient absorbtion around 3 in the low if i m remmeber right ,that a lot, standard 10 cm broadband are less than 1 at 125 hz and the more it go in the low the less it absorb.
you better ask in acoustic forum if it worth it to make the bass trap on your own not really sure about all this, maybe with homemade you can make them as good.

for bigger surfaces: is it better to build a huge trapper? or create a frame with 3 or 4 small trappers side by side?

wiznanda: great video too.

hum.. i suppose you can make bigger ones, but to have this size is easier cause they are easier to move around, you can make several of them and just put them next to each other.
i have 21 of there babies, its FUCKING efficent! i moved not long ago though im in a huge room now like 35m2 so i should probably make a few more.

@Nomad Moon
anyway to give an idea of the budget, the 21 i made costed me around 500e in materials, don't know where you live but here in france its fucking expensive! specially the tissu you put around them if you want good quality!

but yeah basstraps the way to go, and also use the biggest room you have in your place, the bigger the better the bass will sound. ideal is like around 30m2 i would say. over 20m2 is fine though, under that its really hard to hear the bass well.

to conclude i would say that having a kick ass room is the most important thing when you produce music, way more important then good gear, in the last 14 months i moved 4 times and have tested 6 different rooms with the exact same gear. Conclusion, if your room is small and have bad acoustics and even if you do have a shitty load of basstraps you can't make music in good conditions. You will spend hours and hours trying to adjust things when it will take you like a split second to do it in a good room.

the room and acoustic treatment is what makes the difference between the pro's / semipro's and the rest.

interesting post! i dont think you can define an artists quality that way but i get the idea.

i have no experience with different rooms, all i can say is that 12 mounted 4,7inch rockwool traps helped alot in my little room (~15m2).
but i have still this bass room modes >.<

so what else is a big room good for? just bass?

cheers

a big room breaths more, so your mix will breath more as well, for example in small rooms you will often have to put a lot of traps and stuff to make the room sound "okay" doing this you kill the natural reverb/sound of the room, so you will have a tendancy of putting too much reverb in your mix for instance. i have had my monitors since 2003 and have probably used them in more then 20 different rooms and i can safely say the bigger the better. okay maybe not too big over 35m2 is prob too much. in all the pro studios i have been the control rooms have always been in from 20m2 to 35m2.           On 2011-03-08 23:13, moki wrote:

For example the lowest frequency 20hz is 17 metres long.If the room is smaller than this it will generate standing wave from reflections (without basstrap) for that only issue.
If this frequency is repetitive, otherwise it reflects at least.
If it isnt 4,25 metres long it wont even reach the loudest point or the peak of this wave. The higher the frequency the shorter the wave.
Standing waves is what happens mostly in untreated rooms and with them it's impossible to have a real picture of the music.
