Artist : Room 10
Title : Complex
Label : Tree Hand
Format : Digital
Release date : 24 feb. 09

Tracklist:
1. Complex feat. Dunn - original mix
2. Complex - Yakine rmx
3. Complex - Ekkohaus rmx
4. Complex - Solead rmx

The French label Tree Hand, founded by the duo Solead to promote quality creative music with a focus on genre-crossing experimentation, hereby launches its fifth release, dedicated to the French mininal duo Room 10. This duo comprises the fine, versatile, underground DJ and radio host Guet and his Chilean-born accomplice Hector Pizarro. Guet, (both individually and with his project), has also had a hand in the music writing and/or remixing of Solead’s own production. It hasn’t taken long for Tree Hand to attract attention and favour from demanding music lovers: their fourth release recently scored 17 on the Beatport Minimal charts.

1. Complex feat Dunn – original mix
The original mix highlights the Duo’s taste for jazz as testified by orchestration devices such as the reverbed sax sample, the cymbal ride, and the drum rolls. The bass is abyssal and will definitely impress when played on the right sound system, while the whispered syncopation fuels a sweet minimal drive. The asset of this version is certainly its eerie, deep atmosphere; however the track is slightly undermined by a lack of genuine progression. But this is a personal and minor qualification, if any is to be made.

2. Complex – Yakine rmx
The next edit is signed by the young Tech producer Yakine, with a few releases on the Spanish label Esperanza, and small French imprints such as Je t’aime records or Circus company. His take adds a new bassline that is reminiscent of a Trentemoller classic tune, but without the depth & drive, and this noble patronage hardly conceals this version’s lack of original ideas.

3. Complex – Ekkohaus rmx
Greek producer and Berlin resident Ekkohaus is no newcomer to Minimal, with a few releases under the belt at Morris Audio, Cargo Edition, Multi vitamins, Serialism, Level rec., and Brut. His interpretation substantially strenghtens the rhythmic combo with all kinds of metallic sounds and playful syncops but plays down the jazzy elements with the exception of the sax sample. A more driving edit, yet still a bit static to my humble ears.

4. Complex – Solead rmx
With releases on a wide range of acclaimed labels such as Renaissance, Vapour, Citizen, Iboga, Tribal Vision, Blue Tunes, Beef, etc. the talented duo comprising Charles Michaud (Triptych) & Vincent Courcau (Tetraktys, Motion) has garnered the attention of premier league musicians such as Vitalic, John Digweed, Jamie Stevens of Infusion fame, Damian Lazarus, Minilogue, Ticon/NDSA, Kasey Taylor, Boris Brejcha, and D-Nox & Beckers, to name but a few of the artists with whom they have collaborated on various projects. The Solead wonderboys depart from the somewhat static haze and hypnotic jazz of the original, only keeping and amplifying the pinched “ha” sample, while tweaking and honing every pretext of the original to build up a minimal yet compelling and sophisticated groove. This track aims at a more tech-house feel, rolling on the glissandi effects of the bass. A complex and detailed polyphony intertwines an offset bell chime lead with tight & tasty percussion flourishes and rattles, and steers the track forward until it launches a fierce chord strike invigorated by an additional cymbal drive towards a powerful finale. If you’re looking for Minimal that rocks, this one is jubilant!

Bottom line
A fine package that will meet the demanding requirements of well-produced minimal. The original edit and Ekkohaus’ piece are nice. But the Solead mix outshines the rest. The French sound-aristocrats never cease to impress me release after release. This one is no exception. Hats off guys!
