Well i've been up last night watching videos of the Roland V-synth GT on youtube & i have to say i'm very impressed. I'm interested in getting this as a companion for my Virus TI.
I know this is a completely different beast to the TI, capable of much more. The videos show off a lot of it's features but there's nothing about how good the filters are.
So i'm wondering if there's anyone here who has one or preferably both the TI & the GT. Is the V-synth GT worth the hefty price tag?
I also want to know if you need to add a separate card for the vocal designer function or is it built in?
It would be cool if someone could post some samples with heavily filtered leads.

Stas from Vibe Tribe in this forum has both he wrote some time ago. He said the GT kicked the ass of the TI. I'm also very much in love with the GT.

I have the V-Synth XT and im very satisfied with it if you want to hear how the V-Synth sounds you can hear it in action on the latest Younger Brother album and on Infected Mushrooms: The Doors Remixed,
Here on youtube you can hear it processing a voice with the elastic audio engine: @ 03:17
And in the track by Younger Brother-I Am A Freak @ 02:14, the female voice is a fabric preset on the V-Synth called oriental vox, wich Simon Posford is tweaking with the formant knob.
As for the filters it can sound really analogue if you want to and rub it the right way it has 303 filter emulation and lots of good waveforms, supersaw and feedback osc from the JP-8080/8000 series. and the usual waveforms found in every analogue and virtual analogue Synthesizer.
Those are some examples, i can post some filtered samples tomorrow.
I choose the XT because of its nice little format, and because it has the VC-1 card built in (Roland D-50 Emulator)because im a big fan of the Roland D-50 so if you like the D50 you will really love the XT since it has more waveforms then the orginal D50 had and more memory, and better audio quality the the original D50(wich i also have). It also has the VC-2 Vocal Designer card built in. On the GT Roland removed the PC card slot, so you cant use the VC-1 card on it, but since the GT has the VC-2 card built in and has dual engine, you can use the VC-2 card at the same time as the regular V-Synth engine wich is pretty cool
And i dont think that the videos that people have uploaded on youtube and the videos roland made on their site, does the V-Synth justice especially not if you are doing psy and really want to know how tweaked out it can sound. Its very quick and easy to load samples into it via usb and just tweak away.
btw another minor detail, the original V-Synth didnt have color display, the XT and GT both have color displays.
I recommend that you read these reviews on Sound On Sound:
Thanks Diaks for your very helpful post! It would be awesome if you could put up some samples as i don't have any place to test it out myself.
So other than the fact that you can't use the vocal designer at the same time as the v-synth & you don't have the AP synthesis, the XT is the same as the GT right?
So these freaky tweaked voices u can hear in sphongle's and YB's tracks come from the V-Synth ? wow.
I must have one. Btw i tried the XT version in a musicstore, with a TB303 patch and i was pretty stunned : very expressive thing with a lot of dynamics in the sound...
BUT, some say that it sounds very COLD.

I would rather save the extra $800 if i can.
There is one more thing you will not get: the D-Beam controller, wich i can really live without. I havent really liked that feature since its first appearance on the MC-505 back in 1998, the whole idea of waving your hands above the synthesizer just is a bit corny for me but who knows it migt a good tool for live performances. However it still has full D-Beam compatibility via midi so if you happen to have a MC-505 or another Roland product with this feature you can use it without problems to control the D-Beam from there.
The other control the so called time trip pad is available on the XT via the touch display so you can do some nice filter sweeps on it as well asigning whatever parameters you like to a X and Y axis and control it in full vector style with your fingers.
Also a good thing is that if you sample direct into it via its various inputs, you can edit the sound directly in a sound editor similar to soundforge or wavelab a bit more basic but really effective and in it you can use your fingers to edit the waveform then make fine adjustments with the dial button if you want.
And about the V-Synth sounding cold, it all depends on how you program it! I mean shit in shit out basically, if you load a really warm analog sample into it, what you hear is what you get I have a nord lead 2 and a jp-8080 here next to it and i think it sounds better then both in its own way, but the best of both worlds is to sample the nord lead for example into the V-Synth or to use it as a filter bank or effects processor.
The reverb unit in it is kickass IMO. Way better then the basic one you get on the Nord Wave for example. Im of to school now have a nice day and i hope you can decide at some point wich of the versions you will buy.

Btw just to avoid any missunderstandings, the V-Synth doesnt replace the Nord Lead 2 for me, they are a good combo and if you have a Virus it will not replace it either because they are all very good at what they do and they are intended for different things. Same goes if you plan to buy this one and is looking for a good allround syntesizer/workstation like the tritons.. this one is not that type of synthesizer its made more for sound designers. For pianos and more acoustic sounds i would look at the tritons instead or perhaps the Roland Fantom series.
