They are both very fat and great sounding. The sh-09 was made around 76-78 and the 101 around 82. Their main differences in sound come from the fact that the sh-101 is CEM based (CEM3340 VCO) and uses a Roland filter chip (IR3109) and that the sh-09 is discrete based synth.
For me the sh-101 is THE bassline and liquidy/quirky lead psy-trance synth.
Just listen to some Simon, MWNN, Transwave, Serge, GBU tunes. And it is cheap.
It might be hard finding an sh-09 in mint condition.

i was looking the price ,the sh 09 should cost less but with the fact it s hard to find it cost neer twice the price of the sh 101 ,so i think i ll go for the 101 , heard there is different revision, do you know what is that? and if there is something special to chek on the synth when i buy it, thx for help. |

There is also the 202 which is the same synth engine as the 101 but has a 303-style onboard sequencer instead of keys. The sh-101 comes with a grip that allows you to wear it like a guitar (see 80's pop bands with gay hairdoos). I prefer the looks of the sh-101, but if you find a cheap mc-202, go for it.

I have an SH101. I love it. Its got the waveform mixer that the SH09 doesnt have and i think because of that you should get the 101. |

The most common colour is gray. There are also red, blue and some rare white ones.
I have a Juno 60. It is also very nice, but it does not sound like the sh-101. The pads and stabs are absolutely great, especially with that (slightly noisy) chorus that sounds great and creates fantastic stereo image. If only the high pass was resonant. Not that it won't do great leads and basslines, but it does not sound like an sh-101.

I've had a 101 and 202 for many years and i think they're great synths.
But but i prefer my sequential circuits pro1. It has much better modulation facilites and a fatter sound than the rolands(though i dont know about the sh09) I would definatley recommend having a listen to this synth. I'm in love with mine (steady)
It will cost a little more than the rolands but would be well worth it. Bass as tight as a gnats chuff.
good luck |

Yes, the Pro-1 is another fantastic monosynth. Its a bit more expensive than the sh-101, but sounds larger than life. I would get one of those as well, but instead I chose to put a CEM3340 VCO and CEM3320 filter on my modular that also has 3 CEM3310 based ADSRs. I get very close to that sound and use it a lot for basslines and main leads.
By the way the Creamware pro-1 sounds quite nice too, especially through a nice pre/comp/EQ. And the big pro is the sample sequencing.

Recently, I cannot buy an ARP 2600 for $1000, I haven't the money ;-(
I have a Juno-106, and it makes a great (normal) bassline and sub-bass (very famous for both). If you cannot get a SH-101 (really amazing and very famous for its extremely rapid envelope), Juno-106 is the second one (or Juno-60, fatter than Juno-106).
Juno 106/60 has an amazing filter self-oscilating and really makes a fat, but characteristic, pad. But the Juno's envelope
are too slow, though. |

Rumour has it that Wayoutware's TimeARP soft synth, nails the 2600 sound down to a t.

have you already tried this?
put the arpegiator in 'up', and then turn it on while holding down the transpose button
now it's in unison mode and only the juno-60 can do this (that's why it's better then the 106 ).
It's not a great trick for psytrance (where everything has to sound clean), but WOW, what DnB basslines... screaming and distorting like there's no tomorrow (especially when you open up the resonance of the LPfilter, incredible)... God i love that synth... |

I'd kill for the 101.
Played with it a bit today. Made some very nice bass sounds.
Everyone in the world is doing something without me |
