He's known for aiming for the male crowd in the lowest possible way - a load of violence with occasional respites that usually contain nude hotties. Hell, he even found a way to include nudity in 300. He produces, writes, edits, takes charge of cinematography and even composes music for most of his films, and with only an occasional blip of class to any of his creations... not a good sign for most people in the film industry.
His filmography includes the Mariachi trilogy (El Mariachi, Desperado and Once Upon a Time in Mexico), a few horror movies (Curandero, the Faculty), cooperations with Quentin Tarantino (Four Rooms, From Dusk Till Dawn, Grindhouse), comic book movies (Sin City, 300) and the lame-kid-stuff (Spy Kids trilogy)... Usually flaunting his lack of respect for anything cerebral.
Is he just a pop-culture icon, responsible for dumbing down the crowd as much as riding the crest of their stupidity and adoration, or is he a true mirror of what people really want, without the guise of civilization and culture holding down his raw, sometimes even crude creations?
I vote for the latter.
My conclusion: Robert Rodriguez - Brilliant.
What do you think? |

He's obviously multi talented person with a touch in pretty much everything but acting and catering i guess. I didn't like most of his movies though cause he really lacks that extra something that his mentor, Tarantino, has. I can watch and enjoy 300 for example but Sin City is just a violence parade. Also From Dusk Till Dawn is hilarious and Four Rooms IMHO is one of the most underrated movies ever. He's a bit like Spielberg, a genius but with too many misses among hits.

i think it depends on the person.u have to understand the way and why he does what he does..which at first glance might seem amateur and uninspired..
for me he is genious, one of my favorite,if not the favorite, directors!

theres a fine line between a genius and a madman...and often geniuses do something retarded...as far as rodriguiez goes his moment of retardation was with Once Upon A Time in Mexico

He didn't write or direct 300...Zack Snyder directed.
I personally don't think he's brilliant really...but definitely above average and makes entertaining movies. |
