hello all,
having a little trouble mixing percussion right. my question is how powerful should percussion be if im trying to mix bass kick and percussion to be sounding all equal, so its just sitting underneath the mix leaving room for the mids to breathe through. I end up wondering after i processed percussion with reverb eq and compression is it actually sitting in the mix? is there any guidance i could keep in mind?
cheers.

There really aren't any specific levels to tell you to be able to set them at. The best thing I personally think to do. Is to have another professional track loaded up in your sequencer and solo it and play it once and a while. Then go back to your track and adjust the levels of your drums, then listen to the other track then back to adjusting your drums levels. Mostly just listen for the balance between the other sounds.
As far as reverb goes, I find it nice to place usually a pretty short decay on the reverb for drums with a small amount of predelay. This way they sound "up front" because your hearing reflections off of the virtual close up walls. Then you can always back them off a bit. This also keeps them alot more "tight" in the mix because they aren't washing all over the room.
If you take your compressor and solo out just one drum sound. Turn the attack, decay, and ratio up all the way. Then turn the threshold down till your getting about -12db of compression. From there start turning up your release slowly, you'll hear how that is effecting the sound. Do the same with the Attack, get both of those balanced out so they are letting through the beef of the sound. Then bring your ratio and threshold back up till they sound pretty good.
This will give you a very controlled drum sound that doesn't jump all over the volume spectrum. This way you can be very precise where you place it in the mix. |
