I need to process a big amount of samples to make them all sound at the same volume. Is there a way to make this operatione "one-click" ?

I think I need a kind of compressor with look-ahead or soemthing like that.

Any ideas?           http://soundcloud.com/aedem

I think Cool Edit has a batch process function so you could normalise them all.

But normalise will only bring the peaks to 0db. If you use a compressor setting with batch and the files vary in volume quite a lot then you're going to get some over/under compressed files.

If you use a gentle setting, they'll get closer in volume without to much damage.. depends on how close you need the volumes.

I think the difference in rms level between the loudest and the quietest sound is around 12 dB

Maybe rms-normalize + peak limiter will do the job...           http://soundcloud.com/aedem

U have batch conversion but you have also a cool new feature in Adobe audition 3 called group normalize.. You just open all tracks u want to normalize and than scan them all.. Audition will do the rest and set RMS levels to average level of all tracks or u can manually set it to value u want..
Oh yeah, and audition off course limits the signal and tells u in percent how much of it will be limited for each track before processing..
You can use these feature also on your final masters to pump up your track           http://www.myspace.com/djacidkills
