Rising 6th

I was watching a show about the evolution of rock, and Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden, and one of the best voices ever) was talking about rising 6th.
Basically, it means using the 6th note in the major scale in the melody in an up-and-down manner (going from the root to the 6th and back and so on) - like in Frank Sinatra's 'My Way' (think of the first verse).
Aparently it has some 'magical influence' on listeners, creating a catchy hook.
Isn't psycho-acoustics grand?

Do you know of any other psycho-acoustic tricks?
(example, the k-bbk-bbk-bbk-bb is some kind of a trance hook)

polyrhythms are kind of like a dance music hook - overlapped time signatures...

I love the 6th. It's a real thinking mans interval There's too much root third and 5th stuff going down in modern dance music.

I love 7th as well, but it has been used over and over

But then of course all the notes can be interesting if you mix it up a little.

I'd like to hear more of this scale:

1,2b,3,4,5,6b,7.

It's like a phrygian dominant 3rd flat 7 thing I think. It's cool because if you play it up and down it's got a double mystery as I call it. If you play it you'll know what I mean. But if you play through 2 octaves of it it sounds weird because the 7th,1st and 3rd occur within the space of 3 semitones.

I'm sure some folk find it quite disonant, but there's nothing as spicey to my ears

Cool Stuff !

Try listening to old Marty Friedman material, he used to incorporate all sorts of 'odd' scales

Try this in A Minor

A C E F ( 1 - 3 - 5 - 6 )

One of the most pleasing melodic chains I know.

My music theory is shite due to learning every instrument, by ear.
Can someone do a music theory idiot's post about this rising 6th business, in order for me to understand what you people are on about?
