I've never really given this much thought but do professional producers tend to use rise and sweep samples or synthesize them from scratch by themselves?

Does any one have some good tips on creating nice rises btw?

we use both.
To create a nice rise, choose any synth prest that you like, remove all fxs such as delays, reverb..., give it a long attack and a full sustain, write an automation for the cutoff frequency and the volume et voila !

I like to make every sound by myself - more flexible and easy to edit

General rules are always the same: sine/saw/noise as source. pitch/filter to envelope or/and lfo
