It's hard for me to explain what I mean in this with words.

But I've noticed that some filters, when set to a very sharp cutoff, have a very tonal "ringy" quality to them, while others have a very a-tonal "whooshy" quality to them.

What is the technical difference that causes these two different sounds?

I'll try and see if I can get examples of both.

All of the filters in massive are very "ringy". The one in Traktor is kind of ringy, and the one in the effects section of the DJM-600 (which I don't have hooked up at the moment) is extremeley "whooshy"

This depends on what kind of slope the filter has and how much resonance this produce at the cutting point, you can always make it more ringy if you open the resonance knob of the filter, or have it closed and listen with just the slopes, 6db slope will produce the whooshy filtering while a 24db slope will make it more ringy because cutting so instant will gather more energy at the cutting point and makes a resonance on its own.. And theres also a huge difference between analog and digital filters, analog filters imo have a much more beautiful woosh sound

You have different analog filter designs (I think for example the moog filter is a "ladder" type). You are just comparing LP/HP?           http://www.myspace.com/fragletrollet

I associate wooshing with a filter that applies it's own distortion. Things always sound much more "wooshy" with a bit of distortion

The ringing is pretty obvious as there's a volume control for it on most filters.

it depends on the filter's internal gain structure / compensation, its phase response, q, poles & slope...

in analog electronic world there are a few different ways of achieving filtering for music synthesis. many software filters try to emulate analog models....

Here this shows the difference:

first is the DJM-600's filter from the effects section

and second is the filter which is built into NI Massive
