is anybody using REVerence (or IR reverbs in general) for their percussion? i'm starting to experiment with it and would appreciate some tips. any specific impulses you found to be good for drums?

or do you prefer to use algorithmic reverbs for percussion?           https://soundcloud.com/dead-end-dance

on a related note, do you typically use pre-delay for your percussion reverb?

with a short predelay, it seems like the the sound is more defined, since there's some time for the sample to sound before the reverb kicks in and starts morphing with the direct sound. on the other hand, when i remove predelay, the timing seems to be more accurate and percussion appears to be sharper. which i guess would make sense, since the longer the predelay, the bigger the space appears to be. so when i remove the predelay, things sound more upfront.

i'm mostly talking about closed hats. i generally end up with 4-8 closed hats, playing different grooves (some of which are sparse). i want my hat lines to be pretty distinct, yet not too upfront, harsh, and overpowering. i also want a sense of cohesion between my percussive elements (so they sound as part of one kit, instead of single shots). i've been setting up 2 sub-busses for percussion for mids and highs. mids are hipassed around 200-300 and high-shelfed around 6-8K. higs are low-shelfed around 7-9K. this seems like a quick way to separate the frequency ranges, but i'm still playing with this. and i do some light compression on the whole drum group to achieve some degree of cohesion.

but right now i'm concentrating on reverbs for my percussion, spending a considerable amount of time changing things around and listening to the results. but it's all still a lot of trial-and-error (even with understanding the basics) and i'm still not sure what i like more.

so some pointers would be appreciated.           https://soundcloud.com/dead-end-dance
