I use several reverbs but in general:
- one on a send channel, dry offcourse completely off, decay about 1sec, HP at 400hz, large diffusion, middlesized room, it's good for some tiny reverb on the percussion
- several different reverbs on each sound as I please. Often on the end of a chain of efx in an efxchannel (except when I gate) where I route several sounds too (for cohesion).
- Some unique reverb for one particular sound like an everlasting reverb on a kick, some reverb with big ER, small diffusion, let's say to use it in an atypical way (more like an efx that changes the sound in a more fundamental way).

So for an early reflection do you set the tail to zero, but adjust the predelay. So its more like a slapback? |

More like several (between 5 and 15) very short slapbacks, each with a varying, random delay time, different level and (in advanced ER algorithms) varying degrees of diffuseness.
You have to imagine what's happening to the sound in the space that's being emulated; several walls, the sound bouncing between them once, twice or three times before it reaches the ear of the listener. Each bounce loses energy, has its spectral content modified by the material it bounces off, and becomes more diffuse.
NOT just a predelay/slapback!

I see! Thanks Colin. I've applied these ideas to my current project and it sounds much more together. |

explanation for early reflections from a book I'm reading:
Quote:
|
Waves that bounce off of surrounding surfaces in a room must travel further to reach the listener and therefore arrive after the direct sound and form a multitude of directions. These waves form what are called "early reflections". Early Reflections give us clues as to the reflectivity, size, and general nature of an acoustic space. These sounds generally arrive at the ears less than 50msec after the brain perceives the direct sound and are the result of reflections off of the öargest, most prominent boundaries within a room. The time elapsed between gearing the direct sound and the beginning of the early reflections helps to provide information about the size of the performance room. Basically, the farther the boundaries are from the source and listener, the longer the delay before its reflected back to the listener.
Another aspect that occurs with early reflections is called "temporal fusion". Early reflections arriving at the listener within 30msec of the direct sound are not only aidobly suppressed, but are also fused with the direct sound. In effect, the ear can't distinguish the closely occurring reflections and considers them to be part of the direct sound. The 30-msec time limit for temporal fusion isnt absolute; rather, it depends on the sound's envelope. Fusion breaks down at 4msec ´for transient clicks, whereas it can extend beyond 80msec for slowly evolving sounds. Despite the fact that the early reflections are suppressed and fused with the direct sound, they still modify out perception of the sound, making it both louder and fuller.

hope that helped to understand the basics of early reflections a bit more

but I'm not quite sure how to get this with a reverb plugin...could you maybe explain the way to go about it please colin?

i often use two reverb units
1) a shorter reverb for e.g. drums (e.g. to make the snare less dead sounding, when recorded in a dry room (or using a dry sample)) and
2) a longer reverb to "fit sounds into a room"

yeap, exactly, for me that technique does 90% of the job.

+1
I tend to add reverbs to my mixer as I need them but it almost always works out like this. Sometimes I'll have also a third reverb on a send, doing early reflections - mainly for top-end percussion where I want to put the sounds in a space without having an actual reverb tail.

Yeah killa way, end up this one too most of the time - but it is also often very nice fx with special desgined reverb for one playing sound and then add the send fx - killa shiat with automating................
