Reverb on bass?

what's the right way in order to get only the high freqs of the bass reverbed?

create a send track with a high pass filter and a reverb and then apply the desirable amount of this send effect?

if not, what's the right way to do it?           .

You can do it as a send effect or a group channel.

What I did is create 3 different FX channels and did a prefader send to each at the full amount. Then I turned the main fader volume to 0 on the original channel (with the pre-fader send it now gets sent solely to the FX channels).

On FX channel 1 I put a lowpass filter around 500Hz, so that only the bass frequencies were heard on this channel.

On FX channel 2 I put a lowpass filter at 4k and a highpass filter at 500Hz.

On FX channel 3 I put a highpass filter at 4k.

Then I put different effects on each channel, so that as I played my melody and open/closed the filter with the mod wheel, the melody would 'drift' between different effects.

It took some massaging on the exact cutoffs, and I found I have to adjust them to keep the levels right.

But it sounds good!

i've been experimenting this afternoon and the way to get only the selected frequencies reverbed is indeed via the send effect. i thought maybe some vst reverbs had the option to reverb only the selected frequencies...

anyway, i didn't try your "experiment" alex, cos i spent all my time automating the percentage of the send effect (high freqs reverb) being "added" on my bassline. actually i got a very nice result when i "accented" specific notes, managing to get a groove that reminded me of Sub6 a lot!

nice one!           .

Reverb on bass can sound really good, especially if it's just on the top frequencies (500Hz and up or so). This is really cool when you have the filter on the bass set to be velocity sensitive - the harder hits cause little 'voices' to drift off in the reverb.

Or better yet, take your bassline and do a send to several channels - on each channel EQ out all but a small frequency range, and put different effects on each channel.

Then as your bass 'squeaks' into upper frequency ranges it will get various effects and whatnot.

Granted this could get out of hand real fast, but it would be neat to then put a common reverb on all the FX channels so they sounded more like the same instrument.

errr, I would rather be in the studio than at work!! (if it isn't obvious)

reverb on bass - very nice effect!

Fantastic post. Thanks.

has anyone got tips on using reverb on the kick? i've tried various settings in logic's built in reverb plugs, with and without highpassing, but in the end it either sounded metallic and horrible or just plain horrible. still it must be possible to get it sounding good as reverb on the kick is/was used extensively in techno in the late 90s early 00s...
any ideas?

i like in some tunes even full on but when i use it , it s more to make the sound more hifi or have a bit more depth but it s subblte in the mix you can t hear the kick have some reverb. sometimes i boucne it or use logic gate sidechained to the kick.. depend the mood or i dont use any depends if it work or not. i used one of logic with good result but dont remember wich one, it was not the convolution but one algorythmic, the key is to keep it suble except if you want it as a effect and setting right the amount of low and highs in the verb

I like to put reverb on bass via send and even not little.Sounds somehow heavier for sure not really worse but am not 100% sure I tested it in my new surround track and was confused that it worked like a bigger punch, maybe because of the surround - mixing in surround in regard of frequencies is of coures much simpler than in stereo even though it can get alot of more complex with everything else.I also guess it works with reverb here because its not an insert.
On kicks havent tried in surround but it never worked in stereo so far for me.But lots of productions sounds to me like there was reverb on kick. For instance the old and last cosma album had such tracks ,sounded like small reverb on kick to me.

nice topic, would be even more interesting if you would point to a sample of what you described.

when recording a bass instrument , the mic will pick up room verb. Then the engineer will add more verb to shine the bass sounds.

In Electronic music, where the bass comes str8 outta Vb1 or such, there is no reverb in the signal line. ITs a st8 up wavform.

Now u know why we need the reverb on the BASS line.

hmm , after thinking abt how it can be applied and will sound in psytrance, must add -

Reverbs only sound good when the tail of the reverb is heard clean in the mix.
