Clone? You mean completely copy someone elses track?
I've never done that, but fair play, you nailed it! Are you using samples and just trying to copy the mix, cos all the sounds are identical?
Yeah, the fullness is a bit different, but there's not much in it. The first thing that pops out on the original is the massive clap/snare reverb, its really boosted in the highs and sounds quite cheap, lots of flutter-esque noise. Yours is much clearer and fit in the mix better. I prefer it actually.
In fact, the clap reverb is so loud, I'm pretty sure I hear the limiter turning reducing the rest of the track when it hits.
Your kick is louder and has more upper mid thump/thwap.
The swoosh has a bit more upper 'shhhhhhh' on it.
I think the melody (kinda slow arp thing) is too phasey on yours, needs more lower mid bite, and a little off the top. Same with the drums - I think you're missing a few drums too.
Just from my ears I think the biggest deficiency is in the mids. Needs a little more fill there. Then compressor the hell out of it - the original sounds pretty flat to me. |

hey tomos,
yeah, i mean completely copy a track, with my own samples / vst´s. the reason of doing it, is to learn and understand things, it really helped me in the past, especial from other styles than psy. the song is a unreleased track from Chris Brown (Golden Girl), i think its a very expensive production, but the mp3 quality sucks.
i heared that clap reverb limiting thing too, and i thought of sidechaincompression.
ill try to use another kick, thanks.
the lead, is really hard to make, if i reduce phasing, you can heare the synthlike noise itself to much, it sound to much digital, but ill try more.
compress the lead melody, or every instrument? what you mean?
i dont hear any other instrument, just a voice "duh" wich plays togather with that metallic crash, so what perc do you mean?

ey the mix is pretty different between the two, are you looking for critiques in all the samples and sounds or just the mix? a few things that are different anyway: (this from the file you just posted), and it's late here so keep in mind this is only from listening to it super quietly hehe (tho that's the best way to check a mix anyway)
- the original the kick is a lot lower in the mix then yours
-also in the original the kick sounds like it either has a very subtle bass note going under it or it's got a tuned distorted tail, the sample also has a very long tail compared to yours
-the original has a electronic snare sample overlayed with the claps (which yours doesn't)
-i think your beat is diff, cos you got the kick playing with the clap whereas the original just has a snare
-in the original, the arp is a lot higher in the mix, maybe even higher then that 8th note melody thing. i can barely hear it in yours, as the 8th note melody is too loud and overbearing.
-also the thing playing on the backbeat (ie on 4) in the original sounds like some sort of steel drum
you've done a good job of nailing the sound of the lead sort of melody, can't really tell about the arp cos it's hard to hear it. you just need to get some better percussion samples to pull it all together
