hey guys , wassup !

i hope everyone is doin 5n ....

ok fellas , i use waves rverb or the waves ir-1 reverb plugins all the time ...

now wat i want to know is tht .... when setting up reverbs for a trk ...

do u ppl set up for a short reverb and a long reverb as 2 sends and then approriately reverb each element in the trk ???

or do u ppl use a different reverb for each element ...[ of course lots of more bouncing to do ] ....

and if 2-3 common reverbs are used throught the trk , wat are good guidelines for setting up equalizers to eq the reverb returns in both short and long reverbs !

hope u ppl got me !

In most of my tracks i use at least three eq-ed send-reverbs, one short, one long and one somewhat inbetween, timed to the tempo of the track so they breathe with the music. If a track is 145 bpm i calculate the duration of a quarter note. 60 (secs) / 145 bpm = 414 msec. per quarter note. You can multiply or divide this a few times by 2 (so you get times like 4.14 sec, 8.28 sec, or 207 msec, 103 msec, 51 msec, 25 msec) I use these reverb times as startingpoints when i'm setting up my effects. I also eq the reverbs, to layer them. Short reverbs have a high freq rolloff, middle reverbs have both a high and a low rolloff, and long reverbs hav a low freq rolloff).

You can put a tiny bit of the longest reverb on all subtracks of your mix so the mix will gel together nicely.

Of course this all sounds overly analytical, clinical, unmusical, unemotional and generally non-groovy. But using this trick you can set up your effects fast and spend more time making music

the thing is tht ... i usually finish off composing and sequencing my trk in 3 days or so ... and as i work on a trk per week basis , then i still have 4 entire days to mix down a trk !

so maybe u guys could post down some more elaborate and personal setups !

I know this is bad practice for CPU, but I tend to put a reverb on each of my main lead/effects tracks.

This way I can tune each reverb to the sound, setting the length of the reverb so that the sound flows out slowly or rushes out quickly (depending on the groove) - this also lets me EQ and compress each track's reverb.

But I like the idea of having several reverbs timed to different intervals - i will try that!

also, in using Waves IR1, do you find that it is a massive cpu hog?

Well....
I think each instrument would respond to a reverb in each moment of the track in a certain way.
So i tend to use one reverb for each track that i wish to have a reverb.
Yeah its bad for cpu, sure, but if its givin u a hard time in that area just try hard to make the best as possible then export to wav.
Also most vsts come with a reverb built-in already (ok u might find the reverb of the vst sounds cheap, but maybe not)

U might also put reverb really high in the bus and automate the intensity of bus effect that u need for each time u wanna use that verb.

there are probably even more solutions : )

maybe u should work more on the track before coming to the mixdown? if you work on tracks on a weekly basis & finish the track in 3 days, 4 days of mixing won't change much....

but if you can extend your track work to say 5 days, and 2 days of proper mixing is done, it can do wonders...

kinda offtopic & totally my opinion...but just thought i'll let u in on my thoughts also           Interviewer: "So Frank, you have long hair. Does that make you a woman?"
Frank Zappa: "You have a wooden leg. Does that make you a table?"

Your mixing should be creative as your sounds. Think about the space that you want your sounds to live in, and then try setting the reverb. Personaly, I like to use as few as I can, because I don't want to mess the mix with a lot of reflections.
Also you don't have to divide your time between composing and mixing, I like to do both at the same time and then just master it.           "a new art came into my mind which only you can create, the Art of Noises, the logical consequence of your marvelous innovations." Russolo, 1913

Have anyone tryed Rayverb plugin ?
I have an demo version of it, but it seems to be a very quality reverb. I was using only "timeworks reverb" until i found this new one. I is very useful becouse you can place you sound in 3D. Anyone vave the full version of it ?

YES YES YES. So many times I hear people say "engineering is something technical, writing music is something creative" which makes no sense to me.

To me it is all part of one big tapestry - the space we build to write our melodies in is *just* as important as the melodies themselves.

Cheers man - I agree with your approach.
