so, i was under the impression that it was bad form to apply reverb to your channels before you mixed/mastered a track.

is that a common thing, or am i misinformed?           Doof Local

it's wrong to put reverb on the master channel, but on the other regular track channels it's ok to put it before mixing. sometimes i think the reverb it's an important part of the sound. what you've been told it's true for aqoustic music.           http://www.youtube.com/user/ChichkeMultiTech

i know at the 80's people used to put reverb on the master. but the 80's sucks! i don't think today any mastering engineer will put reverb on the master, specially at electronic music and particularly at psytracne.           http://www.youtube.com/user/ChichkeMultiTech

Reverb should preferably be on aux tracks/effect sends/fx tracks or on the tracks themselves. Preferably both, a master reverb to get a sense of unity in the sound image and a couple of ones for FX or other sounds you want to have a crazy 'verb on.

Different sounds should have different amounts of reverb, partly because different sounds require different amounts to sound equal(reverbration theory is actually a quite complex issue), partly because you might want some sounds dry/dryer(kicks and bass for an example) and partly because the amount of reverb helps place the sound in depth(more verb' sounds more far away, usually).

Applying and balancing reverb is a part of mixing, though most people work continuously on mixing and actual production, as it's hard to get a good picture of how your track is progressing if your kick is twice as high as everything in the mix.

However, the last touches, which if one is very thorough takes more time than the basics, should be reserved for the pure mixing part. Only then will you have a complete picture of the track and all it's components. The reverb is actually, in my experience, often the last thing you touch before finally bouncing your mix.           http://soundcloud.com/locrian/tracks

do not agree. there are some masterpieces made in the 80's that sound good everywhere, even on crappy sound systems.. wma and mp3 at 128kbps!

for me reverb is part of mixing/composing stage, used creatively as a obvious effect or in a more subblte way as a mixing tool.
i find it s one of the hardest/tricky tool to master, a bit like eq. i have been more a delay guy for years it s not long i understand and get better at using reverbs to enhance a mix and not just as a effect.
when you think about it electronicaly generated sound that are not reamped can sound artificial to our ears less realistic cause it s not something that exist in the nature, it alos help a lot to place sound in the space but it s very tricky to not make a total mess of the mix, loose clarity, adding muddiness ...definelty one of the most complex mixing tool for me.

I've used reverb on the master in rock songs to make everything sound like it's being played in the same room. It can be cool. In psy I'd stay away from it.           www.musicproductionnatural.com || www.facebook.com/djamoeba | facebook page

I've used it once or twice in mastering but with electronic music it's very very rare to find a track that 'needs' it as people will use it in production if they want it, and not if they don't. I used it on an old ambient dub track I wrote in 1993, but that was only because I didn't have any reverb at all; the final master sounded much better if only for this reason.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

Its beyond me why someone would like to make music without placing sounds into spaces.

peace out.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I didn't use any because the 2 effect units in the sampler were already being used for spot FX and I didn't have enough memory left to bounce them down so I could use one of them for an ambience reverb - 2MB doesn't go very far! That's if I'd even known back then what an ambience reverb was and how to use it.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

i used to have reverb pedal those days hehe

anywayz its not such terrible idea to use master reverb. but probably much better to do in when mixing on channels/groups rather the everything together           www.sattelbattle.com

never tried the one in ozone but yeah for very dry mix light reverb on the side ina m/s matrix can help but imo it s not the best solution..
