Hi everyone

this is my first post so go easy!

Ive been making DNB for a few years and I am doing my first serious psy tracks at the moment.

I am having a bit of trouble getting my delays and reverbs right.

Most psy seems to have 3 main "channels" of instruments :

Bass - Little or no reverb/delay

Leads - some reverb and delay , predominantely dry sound

FX/sweeps/synths - these sounds are heavily processed with reverb and delay , usually eq'ed with little low frequency content. Quite long delays .

what sort of settings and effects should I use on these sounds. My leads sound ok . But the FX/Sweeps/arp's type of sounds with heavy delay dont sound that great. They tend to be a bit muddy and and fill up the mix . also delays tend to be not as musical as I would like .

some example settings would be great.

my studio is a mixture of software and hardware . plug in wise I tend to use the cubase sx built in reverb and delays the most but I also have some waves stuff.

If your want your delays in rythm, sync them to tempo. If your song is muddy, then remove some wet signal or decrease reverb time until you like it.           http://www.myspace.com/psyrit

use eq to cut the high and the low on the reverb and delay

say a HP at 200hz and a Hi Shelf at 5000hz

have 1 reverb with only early reflections and another loooooong one with NO Early reflections. Send sounds to both and see which one sounds better.

why?

i sometimes use room for bass (and recently i use that more often, especially when the bass has almost open filter on its atack; obviously dull buss, with closed filter envelope, doesn't really sound good with room); and i heard tracks, especially old gold goa tracks, which had lotsa delay on their bass. sounded nice. it just has to be done properly and not generate too much mood and dirt.

what?

what this has to do with reverb and delay?

its like you have to know to use the bathroom before you go a ride with your car..

its good to have a relieved bladder before driving but you can also drive your car and than piss in your friends house or on the side of the road.. or even hold it for a splendid yellow explosion....

main thing about long delays and reverbs is eq for me..
a fat sound with a long reverb tail can cause alot of muddiness in a busy mix cos of the prolonged bass frequencies.. its good to eq the reverb tails without much bass on them.. this is good cause it will push the sound straight to the back of the track adding space not dominance with proper volume and eq..

delays specially for electronic music 4/4 style is better synced to tempo.. again clever eq on the delay repeats is good.
delay is nice on basslines when used well.
a short and fast delay will add speed and a sense of push to the bassline if the bassline doesnt have many notes in the sequence to become muddy if repeats overlap each other to much.          http://www.landmark-recordings.com/

too much reverb will kill your delay.

You can side chain compress long reverb tails to add a nice pumping effect to the track and let the kick shine through a little. Also it can be beneficial to use the predelay on the reverb to allow the transients of your sounds to retain their bite in the mix.           www.quantizecourses.com Studio & Online Music Production Courses
