I don't know if this one has been covered before, but I would be curious to see what techniques you are using when composing leads or anything else apart from basslines. Eg, one tip that I found really usefull was the one by soundmagus: You draw 3 notes (that you think that they fit with your bass) for a whole bar, then you highlight all three and you cut them to 16th and finally you start erasing steps (randomly) and maybe you can come up with something good. What I mostly use, is to copy my bassline and start making changes on it (after I change the octave of course)Finally,I have the bassline+kick looped and play something with keyboard and sometimes with the help from god, I get something close to what I want to achieve... Any other techniques that you are willing to share??? |

i think u got that composing problem, because you have no harmonic theory.
if you got good theory, you know how to make the feeling you want, and of course you need trained ears for that.
tip, never press black buttons on your keyboard, only use the white ones rofl
no... just kidding, but maybe now you understand what i mean.

In regards to writing melody, I highly recommend "The Study of Counterpoint" by J.J. Fux, translated by Alfred Mann.
Also, transcribe melodies from songs that you enjoy and study them in relation to the groove and harmony.
Good luck |

slow down tempo, play shit then go back editing the notes length, velocity and add automation, then speed up again BOOM!
also i might hear some nice melody not necessary electronica could be salsa for all i care... i'll study that
then fuck it up to my style, best regards |

Yes, I have no musical education background so I don't know much about harmonic theory. I use only my ears and if it sounds good, it must be good! Thanks for your replies guys! |

start writing progressive without any melodies...
you can make leads without musical background, but they will be on a level of 90's eurotrance probably.
start playing an instrument and search something like a teacher.
i like starting in ionic scale with basic harmonies, then i play some melody on keyboard till i like it. after i often do some reharmonization
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reharmonization
and make subtle changes on the melody according to that. the rest is just playing around with midi notes.
this i use oly for slow stuff. doing nightpsy i forget everything about theory. just playing, pitching, modulating, arps, gates, fx... everything without any musical idea (except root key and stuff) |

Skip midi - record your key play directly while twiddling knobs.
Then go to the recorded audio, chop it up, and put it on beat.
Can get some realy crazy rhythms/ideas that way. |

There is no easy shortcut to great melodies. If there were, all music schools would have been percussion/Drum schools.
Just play around with the keyboard/Midi notes alot and you will hopefully become better and better at it as the years go by.. -Im not trying to put your effort down or anything like that, but when the "mother of all..." starts to move in on the actual melodical composing, it is in my oppinion a sign of mayor failure in peoples view on music creation.
Just pratice and then practice more. that's the only way to go. I mean the absolute best case scenario you could achieve by following these "step-by-step" guides and advice is that you maybe, not likely but maybe, at some point would be able to make stuff that sounded excactly like all the other people with the same "shortcut" idea, and it IS a shortcut all these guides and tutorials try to provide.
Ill shut up now.. sry

i like step recording
great way for playing ultra fast melodies very slowly
also i like to copy the bassline and use it as the "base" for the melody.. but offcourse if u have very melodic bass , wouldnt work for umpa umpa style |

what I also like to do is playing some long glides, bounce that to audio and chop it up.
