Requirements for electronic music

I have been getting tired of my old second hand PC speakers and am looking into getting something a bit more respectable. Keep in mind I am on a tight budget and likely can't afford more than $1000 on what ever setup I may get. Right now I am thinking two powered speakers and powered sub would be best, but I have just started looking into this. If I want anything worth while I might have to up the budget if I want to include the sub...

Anyway, my question is just about what kinds of things I need to keep in mind when I intend on mostly using these speakers to play electronic (often bass heavy) tracks and producing some of my own. In my dad and some of his friends are seasoned audiophiles who have given me some valuable advice on what to get with my budget but the only problem is they are, well, old and have never listened to anything more electronic than pink floyd.

So I am asking you excellent people if you can bring my attention to some important differences in what I listen to compared to the older guys. I am afraid I will drop $1000 dollars on some excellent speakers that end up being intended for classical music and ruining them with harsh electronic transients and heavy bass/drums.

Any advice is welcome, I am just trying to get myself started in this world. and if it helps, I never intend to play these ridiculously loud, they are strictly for home listening. I don't like it when my ears hurt.

Thanks for the advice! I have have raided the internet for reviews of the speakers and company and it is nothing but praise! Also these definitely seem to be directed at the sounds I intend to put through them, I am as good as decided on these, but I am still looking around for amps. I am just starting to look into your amp suggestion right now.

From what I have been reading that amp sounds spectacular but it has been discontinued! Going to need to hit up ebay or find something else.

You do not need a sub. All you need is decent monitors that go down to about 40hz or lower. Mine only go down to 50hz and its proven a big problem when making my sub sounds as I have to reference on ear phones and home systems.           http://www.youtube.com/user/trawhi (tutorials)
