Reproduction of the "famous Astrix lead"

I was wondering, that do you have any ideas, how Astrix has created maybe one of his most famous sounds, kind of psy lead that has varying filter. I think you hear this sound in many old Astrix tunes, but especially at Astrix - Massive Activity, starting at 2min 6sec.
You hear the same sound (perhaps with a little bit of different colour) in Binary Finary - 1998 remix done by protoculture, at 1min 50sec (it is the tune that starts automatically when you visit protoculture Myspace that is below.

I can think of two techniques, one is that you play very low saw note (maybe (50-100hz), then just play with highpass-filter with a strong resonance (the "traditional" psysound technicue), and the second one where you also use a highpass filter (or maybe bandpass..?), but you use FM-modulated waveform as a basis. Either one of them do not sound like the same.
Maybe some synth with specific coloration? (vanguard..?), or any other ideas?
