Anyone here ever replaced a cpu?

I want to buy 2200+ and replace my older 1400 amd cpu.

I wonder if my current 1400 fan will work on the 2200.... and how do I apply the thermo-paste on when I want to place the heatsink/fan?

Thanx.           Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...

Well i'm not sure that the Motherboard will support the CPU, check out the manual of the MoBo or their website.
As for the fan, well it will suit physically i think but i wouldn't recommend to use the older one. I recommend heavily to buy a new and Good fan, it will affect greatly on the Power of the PC. The old Thermopaste should be removed totally if you want to use the old fan. The cleaner the surface will be before you put the newer paste the better the thermic dispersion you'll get with the fan.
Good luck!

I installed a new CPU, didn't replace an old one.

Get the 2500+, I don't think that it's that much expensive - I managed to afford it . It has a new core, and many heating problems solved.

I'm not sure about the thermo-paste, I didn't apply any, and it barely reaches 55c. Although it had some gooey thing on the cpu itself..

If you can get the fan that comes with the cpu, it can be ok. I'm using the one that came... works good.

Good luck!

Well.... I'm kinda scared to put the Barton core cpus, although some ppl managed to work it out....

2200 is just the fastest working that really works for it.

thanx for the info.           Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...

buy a new fan and i advise you not to hold on your pockets..
with a 30-35 € fan u'll have a cpu to last for a decade..

and check as Pavel said your motherboards manual or on the web to see if your motherboard supports more than 2GHz cpu, although i'm 90% positive it doesn't...           in search for an answer...

Ok after hours of making my CPU work real hard (100%, 100% of time), it stays stable at 60 (sometimes 60.5).
That's good

you definitely wanna stick with amd? i have one myself (2000+) but so many plugins (i am thinking Waves) are optimised for SSE2..... I was thinking my next machine will be p4.....

i guess though that getting new motherboard+more expensive intel cpu is a lot of dough.

Hmmm last year at work I used to have a dual processor amd machine (i think it was 1.4GHz x 2)... it was so unstable it would die on a warm day after an hour or two... I didnt build it and at the time was too scared to install an extra fan..... actually tom anteater now has this machine!!

I love my AMD and I will stay with AMD...
and XP cpus have SSE2 support - so all plugins will work.

cheers.           Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...

fair enough! I dont like buying Intel either ... it's nearly as bad as buying a coffee from starbucks!!!

On the other hand sorry for me being an arse but : i think athlon xp has sse support, not sse2..... the hammer processors have sse2 support though....
see for example the bottom of

http://www.digit-life.com/articles/pentium424athlonxp21/

This is why p4 optimised (SSE2) floating point code runs faster on p4s than unoptimised code or even SSE optimised code on athlons.
