So I am still far from anywhere near doing a liveset, but I am thinking that the most basic "live" thing you could do would be to control how long a section repeats for, or how long a buildup takes before it drops for example.
Does anyone do this? Is it harder than it seems? |

i'm not sure if this is exactly what you mean, but - one of the most annoying things i see live acts (and so very many djs) fail at is syncing up the song's phrases.
in trance, a part is usually added, changed, or taken away every 8 bars (or 32 beats). as a dancer, it annoys the piss out of me when a buildup goes, say, 37.5 bars and then suddenly the drop happens. i want to be able to dance lightly, whip my hat off, nail a spin and pop my hat back on and immediately start some footwork, completely confident that my first step will fall exactly as the beat drops. is that too much to ask?!??! i've been dancing for a long time (professionally and otherwise) so perhaps counting beats automatically is just natural for me, but i think it's pretty awesome when djs and live acts nail this.

Seriously. Keep the trance dance going!
I don't like being tricked on the dance floor. Fake drops and buildups leading to more buildups can fuck off and die.
Obviously there are a billion ways to do everything, but its pretty easy to break for a bit then bring everything back, or create a buildup and make space for it...
for instance, in ableton you could have a bank of buildup clips, say a bunch of 4 bar, 8 bar clips...
Some ideas for clips would be automating a flanger or phaser or other FX unit to fuck with your audio (high passed to avoid fuckulating the bass) over say 4 bars, and when you trigger that clip drop the bass out, or drop the bass out a bar or two before the buildup ends
Could also mute certain parts, for instance trigger the buildup clip, mute the percussion, bring it back when the buildup is over
or trigger the buildup, solo both it and the lead, then unsolo at the end
With stuff like ableton and a well organized set you can have a lot of fun with creating your own fills/drops/breaks that are actually on-time and dance friendly
but its hard work. I certainly can't do it. Yet

teasing and surprising audiences is indeed win.
As in, teasing them with a melody, surprising them with a cool sound or a really awesome break
However, there is a massive difference between that and randomly taking the beat away, or taking it away and then building building...come on...wheres the beat...its coming...BOOM! oh fuck. fake drop. Now I'm confused and I'm definitely not dancing.
Keep that shit off the trance floor IMHO - it doesn't build energy it breaks it and stops the momentum.
I like to actually dance on the floor, not be teased and have my energy flow broken apart a billion times. Then again, I'm pretty particular about trance

It's one thing when it's not trance. If it's not supposed to be a trance experience, then you can do whatever the fuck you want and you won't hear any complaints from me. Silly/funzy dance music I completely understand pulling those tricks.
But long breaks and fake drops/cheesy israeli fullon style ENDLESS buildups...just not compatible with a trance experience for me.

Breaking the trance and then inducing it again is fun.

i'm another one of those.for me it completely kills the flow. imho it's just a cheap trick for producers/dj's to get people to cheer a lot to the music your playing and makes true trance dancing impossible. |

Are we talking cheesy kick roll panning glitching build ups for 30 seconds or a beat drop of a bar and then back to business. If so first one definatly fucking annoying. Second awesome!

Second one is definitely awesome
The mini breaks that last a bar or two are AWESOME and totally build energy. Especially if they have a sweet fill or it gives the lead a chance to breath for a second, or introduce a new sound and then you have the new sound + the beat
I'm referring to looooong breaks, where they take the beat away for like 8-32+ bars, or the cheesy kick roll glitch stuff like you mentioned.
Good quick breaks totally rock.

hehe +1
atleast when they done too often and being too long.. once or twice in a set can be cool , specially if instead the kick there is funny sample like 'you just wanna be fucked in your ass' (aka neuron compost-sonic sodomy)
