Removing clicks from a kickdrum

So I had been going insane trying to figure out a way to make the click/transient of my kicks pleasant to listen to. I equalized a lot, but it was becoming to tedious. For those of you who find yourselves experiencing the same problem, check out DMP Excite me.

It allows you to control the even and odd harmonics of a sound, and I have been getting great results running my kicks through it (along with eq). Using a deesser sometimes seems to help too.

I'd love to hear of other methods.

If you have clicks, its a problem in your Synthesis of the kick - usually in the attack (or lack of one). IMO you shouldn't try to cover up major flaws in the programming of an essential element by EQing or processing.

It's not a "click" as much as it is the higher frequencies generated by the synthesis. If you've ever used Bazzism, it's a perfect example. It's a super nice kick gen, but the higher frequencies are obnoxious as heck and need to be tamed a bit. I use Bazzism, Stomper Hyperion and also Adern Kickme. They all have higher frequency content that is somewhat obnoxious imo.

I wish I could find my soundforge license I hear it makes great kicks as well.

So is the approach you are mentioning to allow it to have the higher frequencies, just to make them pleasant to listen to?

in Bazzism you need to use the envelope behind it to fine tune the attack.... you click the buton ENV then the part of the envelope which you want to mess with to soft the attack ( clicky ) of the kick is beetween the very firsts ms of the kick ( around the 0.005 , 0.05 rectangules ) the sweet spot and size of the envelope depents of the lenght of the kick , there s no right or wrong but tune it till it sounds nice, create a notch in there and go ahead. also for more fine tune details you also could create notches in the center middle square so you can fine tune the mids. In the process of creating ur own kicks people are always worried bout how PUNCH AND LOW IT IS when the clicky is also a very imporant aspect of creatin ur own kicks coz it can be realy annoyin to the people listenin includin urself and for the people producin it can be realy ear fatigue and damage to the ears.

what you doin with the envelope is same as if you d put a equalizer to reduce with notch or peak the high frequencies of the kick but in the case of bazzism you will have a much more detailed fine tune with the envelope coz you will be controlling the progression of the frequencies and not doin a hole in the frequencies as the EQ would make it.

a nice kick in bazzism will leave out of it soundin already nice and smoth to the ears... you will use the eq in the kick to fit it into the mix not to fix the annoyin frequencies.

Hey I also just found out if you hold shift while tuning the sliders, you can get smaller incremental values.

Fine tuning your kick's transient/attack in Bazzism is probably the way to go, because you can adjust all the other parameters of the kick according to it.
There is, however, a simple yet effective way to deal with your kick's attack in a way that produces it's very own character, which I, personally, prefer over the results you (or at least I) can achieve when using bazzism alone.
Ableton (dunno for other DAWs) provides the possibility to 'manually' EQ sounds in the arrangement view:

- drop an audio file (the kick) on an audio track
- zoom in and select the first ms's of your kick by holding down the left mouse button
- right-click the top of the selected area (your kick's attack) and use the 'split' option the pop-up-menu
- after you have split the audio file, double-click the attack part
- now lower the clip-gain in the sample-editing section until it sounds good to you
- select both parts of the kick, right-click the sample and consolidate them

you can try a mix of limiting ,compression ,saturation,eq might help depending the source. depends what you are after for me nice attack is not very sharp but something more rounded and soft to lead to thick/massive and non agressive sound on the ears
