I went to the logic bomb party this Saturday in Thessaloniki Greece and I noticed that although their bass sounded 10 times better than the songs I heared before and after, all the other frequencies where not as clearly audible. Is this why I hear some people removing the very low frequencies from their bass? |

What frequencies are the ones to remove to have that effect? 0-50? |

Psycho-acoustic theory and studies dictate that the human ear can't perceive anything below 18-20 Hz... Surely I wouldn't cut anything higher than that!!
With a little discipline (like the good'ol' DnB days) you can actually make sub-bass frequencies (below 20 Hz that is...) work for your groove. On very big speakers, those are the frequencies that are felt, so this can give a sub-auditory "bounce" - if you know what you are doing
But if you don't know how to control the low frequencies (that carry huge energy) then cut them - but please, not higher than 20-25 Hz... People can distinguish frequencies down to 30-35 Hz, and hear down to 20 Hz...

And these tracks I hear on the dancefloor, do they use a hi pass filter to completely remove them, or do they use a low self filter to gradually remove them? And which one do you think is a better option? I don't have a sub at home and can't play my (crappy) monitors really loud cause of neighbours, so I can't tell. |

Input,
I say it depends on the bass and in which frequency it lives in! and how you want it.
It would be foolish to make it a rule to cut a certain frequency! just because.
For example, if your bass is a flat G1 your bass will live in 49hz, now if you cut this you will cut the root frequncey, so always know why you are applying EQ, let your ears guide you!
its hard to decide if the lowend is "all around" good or if it just fits a certain speaker!
thats why you never can have to many speakers!
I think you grow as a producer once you get the chance to play your tunes in PA Speakers!
UIU,
i would recommend you to just sweep your bass with different "Q" settings and dont boost too much, dont completely remove anything if it not calls for it, you will hear! If not! Train your ears by trying different notes, I.e different frequenices, once you get familiar with how a certain sound sounds in a certain note you will understand where to cut or boost it...
Try and
loop your baseline, kick, drums, leads, and stuff. Take your EQ and make big and small sweeps in the baseline(if you know the root freq you are one step ahead), once you hear something interesting stay there, now narrow your settings and concentrate on that area.
Only make small adjustments and i bet you will find the sweet spot that will sound great with the rest of the instrumentation, if not you maybe need to EQ some other stuff, the lead and the percussion (percussion can be a real frequency thiefs, cut em)
and one last note, you can get real fine bass results if you put a mild boost or a big boost on the root notes frequency, you might want to check your sound levels after that boost, and lower it, but you will get that "omph" and power.
you could even splitt up the bass to different sections, one with the lowend and one with the highend, and EQ them different, for example F2 as lowend F3 as highend.
easy way is to open two of the same instrument or record each note on their own, after you are done with EQ you can rout them to a group and put a compressor on the whole package. There are many different ways, experiment!
hope it helped!
