how would one go about remixing a track? (keeping in mind you would have the original at your disposal) legally) does every channel need to be exported into audio? that takes up much space... way more then a cd..
whats the actual method... how would one keep the patches, on the synths?

I've made quite a few remixes over the last years and this is my preffered method.

Firstly i have to say that i have remixed mostly rock and pop bands which is different than remixing dance tracks.

So, when it was coming for me to remix a song, i always was asking for the cd or cds containing all the elements of the song recorded in seperate channels. Then import all these tracks to my computer and find out which ones i was going to keep and use for building my remix on.

Ususally the main element in which a remix is built on are the vocals, but when there are no vocals(not sample vocals) then you should find the most characteristic sound of the track and use it as the base for your remix.

Let's suppose that you want to make a remix of a trance track that you really like and you can have the material you need from the label.

1) If the original artist recorded his track in a studio and used multichannel recording devices then you could have probably one or more cds with all the seperate recorded tracks for the melodies, beats, chords etc.
In this case you get everything in audio so you can't do much to change the original sound.

2) If he didn't and just mastered his track in the studio not much you can do here, except just playing again by yourself the original melodies and create your own version-remix.

3) The best of course would be to get a cd with the actual arrangement as the producer made it using his software sequencer. Again of course this would be mostly usefull if you had the same vsti's and effects with the original producer. But even if you don't, still you'd have the midi tracks arrangment, making it a lot easier for you to just apply the vsti's you want and start making your own remix.

Alex thanks! you shed some light...

my problem is i probably need a dvdr to contain my cubase dir with the .cpr and all the subdirs that go along with it... otherwise it might get messy and elements can mistakenly be left out.           "On the other hand, you have different fingers."

You can buy DVDr's quite cheaply right now.
For as low as 80$. Just bought meself a NEC Dual Layer 16X DVDRW. And it does wonders.
It's a great solution for backups.           Everyone in the world is doing something without me

If you are working with reason, then you can export your song as a self contained file. I don't understand why Cubase and Logic cannot do that?

Sometimes u use the same audio loop for an audio track. So u don´t need to export all track to wav. Only the loop...

I think in trance u never need a full track in audio(I mean, all track lenght). I have seen some files for rmx´s to trance music, and it´s like this. A lot of loops, no full audio tracks.

But for sure the best way is when u have full arrangement and midi tracks!

If it´s only little difference of bpm I think a nice time stretch engine can do the job! And imo I prefer doing this for small loops, not for big audio tracks.

Btw ppl, what kind of programs are really good for time stretching? AcidPro seems to be nice, but honestly most of the times I use the time stretch tool of Cubase...           LOADING...

You can use Abelton's Live, and you won't even have to worry about time streching. You just need to know the original bpm. You can also choose between several time streching methods. Actually this is just where the fun starts with Live.
