Hello Everybody,

I would like to know, do we need to get permission of the artist of original track if we are willing to remix or remake it ?

And what is the legal procedure to go about it.. i mean approaching artists from different parts of world cant be done personally.. and u dont get email ids of all of them.. how is it usually done ?

Thankyou,

You can basically remix anything you like, permission or not. You cannot, however, do anything with it (lisence it, release it or even play it publically) without the permission of the owner of the rights to the track - this usually means a label, unless the track is not signed, which then means the artist itself.           auspexx@compact-records.com

regardless of whether a label owns the track or no... i think it is courtesy to at least write the original artist...           the FATLINE is ending www.myspace.com/suncontrolspecies

Thankyou all for the info.

I think it could be good idea to get in touch with the record label of the artist and try to seek permission from the artist through the labels.

And its advisable to start working on a track after positive acknowledgement from the artist or label.

One more question arises here, would the record company have the policy to release the remixed/remade track under their label only ?

i don't think anyone really minds if you remix his/her track and play it live @ some party, unless he/she is a total asshole ofcourse..           "The dinosaurs became extinct because they didn't have a space program."

I believe this is only the case if the artists manages his own copyrights (very unlikely). as soon as the artists registers with acum (or any alike copyright management organisation) I believe you need their permission (and pay their fee's to acum).

can anyone back me up on this?

thats true,
technically you need permission to even start to edit someone elses work, however they need permission from you or a warrant to look at your hard drive so you'd be unlucky to get any trouble over a bootleg.

Its worth approaching the artist if you think they are likely to allow you to remix the track (if you have previous production credits or you know them personally for example) as they can give you the original parts which is invaluable. This is also a more courteous way of going about it.

Don't ask permission if you want to do it. Just filter it and say you did it on your own. No one will argue with you and the gimmic will get you money for nothing, chicks for free... even when there's no chance to get permission. No one will sue you, and they can't search your HDD, so who cares?

Anyways, I think it would be better if people did their own music, but people (well, DJs and CD buyers) usually don't agree with me on this one.
