It's totally the principle of the matter. I always viewed the remix conttest thing as a way to give back to the fans. Now it's a way to boost their sales...

That's fine if you want to take shots at folks doing remixes, and don't think they have anything original to provide. Sure, it's only a couple of bucks, but there is no prize, or vindication. RadioHead will listen to the top songs based on votes. So, in addition to generating a little cash, they are also generating more hits to their website. It certainly is a creative marketing idea for them, but they seem hardly concerned with taking a real interest in the music produced.
I disagree that they understand the changes in the market best of all. They took a nice step forward, but they were not very forthcoming in the fact that the download was a lower quality. They're intent seemed to be to boost their CD sales by leaking the music themselves, rather than offering the same quality (or very very close) thru a different distribution medium. It seems like they really wanted people to pay twice for the music. Combine this with the remix competition purchase as well, and it does seem a bit like money is the bottom line.
And that's fine if they want to pursue it like that. Who says they have to. They certainly don't have to champion anything more altruistic. I guess I always felt musicians supported each other more than managers and A&R reps. So if anything, I think they understand the new mediums of marketing and social networking more than they understand the needs & wants of their listeners. I still have a good deal of respect for them, but more about their creativity than their generousity. I'm sur eI'm not seeing the entire picture, but this is just my current perspective of the matter....
